'Angel' won't see a sixth season

WB clips Whedon drama's wings early

By JOSEF ADALIAN

"Angel" is headed for TV heaven.
The WB has opted against renewing the Joss Whedon-produced drama for a sixth season. Frog topper Jordan Levin informed Whedon of the move Thursday night.

Move on the surface is a head-scratcher: Skein is the net's second highest-rated hour among viewers 18-34 and fourth among 12-34 auds. Its numbers have been solid this year, even against brutal competish on Wednesday night.

But Frog execs are also facing the reality of an aging sked, with skeins such as "Charmed," "7th Heaven" and "Gilmore Girls" potentially facing final seasons next year. WB topper Jordan Levin said the net needs to find timeslots to establish a new generation of hits.

Such decisions are usually made in May, when nets have all of their new development in front of them.

"(But) like some of the great series that are leaving the air this year, including 'Frasier' and 'Friends,' the cast, crew, writers and producers of 'Angel' deserve to be able to wrap up the series in a way befitting a classic television series and that is why we went to Joss to let him know that this would be the last year of the series on the WB," Levin said. "We have discussed continuing the 'Angel' legacy with special movie events next year, which is still on the table."

you know what. I am getting sick of the WB. I am not going to watch that network anymore. God! They did it to Buffy, now Angel. What is up in their dumb little brains. So what Angel isn't the highest rating show. Soon, we will see crap like My big, fat stupid person and nothing that will never be compared to Angel. I hate the WB. 🙂

This is truly a HUGE dissapointment. The ratings have been great. The show has had such success this season. I can't understand why they would cancel it now. Hopefully the show will go out with a bang. It would have been great to see Sarah come back in the sixth season, but I guess that dream of mine won't come true🙁

wonder if every fan writes in would it be able to save angel or maybe we'll get lucky and some other net work will pick it up....This isn't fair! I only watch buffy and angel and with buffy gone UGH angel is supposed to keep my attention now this ::grrr::

Do anyone knows the address to the WB, and every actor on the show. Not their home address. 🙂 I wanna write a letter telling them how much I feel for them. 🙁

im lookin around for them so ill come back and edit this when i find some

Thanks I am going to help look, too.

I just read this on the charmed boards, except that the source wasn't variety. Well, I had a tiny feeling that this might happen since the show was almost cancelled last year. I'm glad that Angel made it this far and I hope that they get that movie under way soon. It'll be great for the fans.

I signed the petition..
Like I said in the other thread..... Please someone tell me this info is WRONG!

Buffy Summers just told me about this and well i'm numb. I just can't believe it, the only reason I got through Buffy being cancelled without being too hysterical was because we had Angel, we still had a part of the Buffyverse going strong and now they are taking that away.

When you think of all the horrid tv shows they have and they are cancelling Angel....Angel!!! Its just wrong I tell you wrong.

Here's a thought, what if they moved networks like Buffy did?

Angel switching networks seems like wishful thinking, but it was what I was thinking too. I guess we have to have to hold onto some hope for the future, because without Angel, the TV scene is looking very bleak.

Totally, and also what I was thinking was that if they don't have networks and it does end will they have time to sort out the endings and tie everything up?

The WB is, and always will be a crap network. They were lucky to have had such great shows such as Angel, and Buffy.

As for their cancelling Angel, I was surprised that they would kill a show that did as well in it's timeslot that it did.

From the talk that was coming out of Mutant enemy, and some of the actors(namely Boreanaz), they were looking to wrap up Angel either at the end of this season, or maybe next season. It sounded like it was most likely going to be ended after the 6th season because Boreanaz said that he wanted to move on with his career, but probably would have come back next year if the show was continuing on. It didn't sound like he wanted to be doing Angel 2 years from now. On that note I think it is highly unlikely that Angel would move to another network.

For a network to pick up a show like Angel, they would want to have it for a couple years at least. That's what UPN got with Buffy. A two year deal. I am not sure that Boreanaz would sign on for 2 more years of Angel. It would be a hard sell to get a network to pick a show up for just 1 year.

Oh well, I very likely could be just talking out of my arse. I am very saddened. My fave show(and the only one I EVER watch)is ending this year. On a happier note I'm sure that Joss will set everything aside now and focus on giving Angel the proper send off it deserves.

On another potentially bright note. SMG was saying that she wasn't going to do an episode of Angel with the thinking that she would do it next year instead. With this news that the show isn't going to continue on, maybe she'll reverse her decision, and do it after all. I know...wishfull thinking, but hey with Angel gone that's all I got left.

Here is the official statement from The WB:

For the last seven years Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer have been cornerstones of our network. The sum total of the work done on those shows has produced some of the proudest moments in our history. Like some of the great series that are leaving the air this year, including Frasier and Friends, the cast, crew, writers and producers of Angel deserve to be able to wrap up the series in a way befitting a classic television series and that is why we went to Joss to let him know that this would be the last year of the series on The WB. We have discussed continuing the Angel legacy with special movie events next year, which is still on the table. In a perfect world, all of these details would be completed before this information went to the press so that we could be definitive about the show's ongoing future. But in any case, we did not want to contemplate this being the last year of Angel without giving the show the option of crafting their own destiny for this character and for this series. David Boreanaz continues to be one of the finest, classiest and friendliest actors we have had the pleasure to work with and we hope that the relationship furthers from here. The same can be said for all the actors and producers on the show.

I so wish upon the braintrust at wolfram and hart...er...the WB a terrible rash with a serving...nah make it 2 servings of crabs on top.
