WB wants an audience makeover next season

LOS ANGELES -- Same old, same old WB.

CAPT. VIDEO NOTES: Though nothing's imminent, WB has offered "Angel" creator Joss Whedon and star David Boreanaz a chance to do "Angel" movies in the future.

11:30 Special Angel movies remain a possibility, although Ancier says it'll probably take some "coaxing" to get David Boreanaz interested.

11:36 Ancier hints that Angel might still be with us today, had producer 20th Century Fox given the network until May to make a final decision. "We [were forced] to make the decision early based on their request." I can't be sure, but I think that's really going to piss off Angel fans.

I almost feel sorry for those guys that have to come in and clean up after Levin's screwups.

Did you catch this one?

11:25 Ancier concedes that the network "may have crossed the line" with its cruel American Idol spoof, Superstar USA.

As far as Angel goes though it's just more double-talk, false rumour mongering, and blame games.

Apparently now it's Fox's fault. What happened to "Angel's ratings weren't good enough, and there was no room for growth". I guess they know that boat's not gonna float any more, (now that Angel was the only drama on the WB schedule showing significant ratings growth), so they just assume we'll all just forget about that, and believe this "Fox was picking on us" story.

Some of us haven't forgotten though, so nice try WB, but until we see a production date on these mythic miniseries you keep hinting at, you're still just a pack of liars.

Death of an Angel

Twentieth Television's request for WB to commit early to another season of Angel might have led to its cancellation.

This is going to hurt Angel fans.

Twentieth Television's request for WB to commit early to another season of Angel might have led to its cancellation.

Ancier said had the studio been willing to wait until May "” when WB executives set the fall schedule "” there was a decent chance Angel might have been back for another season. Angel was a perennial "bubble" show. In the three seasons it was renewed, the decision was made in May after new pilots had been viewed and a fall schedule was set. That might have been the same case this year.

"The mistake that was made between us and Twentieth was that we didn't wait until May, we just made the decision early based upon their request," he said.

I think I've said this before, but do you remember that scene in the Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy discovers the Wizard isn't really a Wizard, just a little old man hiding behind a screen, pushing buttons? He bellers at Dorothy, "Pay no attention to the man behind the screen".

Why does the WB always remind me of that scene?

They screwed up. They know it, but they keep on insisting we shouldn't notice.

How many excuses is this we've heard now on why they canceled Angel. This one doesn't make any more sense than the rest of them.

Sooner or later these guys are going to have come out from behind the screen and say, "Oops. We made a boo boo."

I totally agree with you.We all think that, well, maybe not the Wizard of Oz part, but you know what I mean. There's nothing we can do anyway, complaining and hating the Wb won't bring Angel back🙁
I just wish we could get the movies...don't it'll ever happen though

(Btw,click on your Troika Award...there's an &amp factor,do you see that too?)

I know it's not gonna bring the show back magui but I still do hate the WB I have since the day I heard this was the last season of Angel.
And yeah I really hope they start on those movies it's my last chance to see David Boreanaz doing soemthign Angel related that I haven't seen a hundred times before

I know,I do hate The :wbicon: too,but I'm just saying that hating them won't bring Angel back🙁

A little more information on what was said by WB chairman Garth Ancier.

WB Wants Angel Movie

Garth Ancier, chairman of The WB network, confirmed to SCI FI Wire that the network has approached Angel creator Joss Whedon about doing a telefilm version of the canceled television series, about a vampire with a soul. "[We] have an offer on the table to Joss to do movies," Ancier said during the network's fall press preview in Los Angeles. "When Joss and David Boreanaz are both interested in doing it at the same time, I'm sure we will be doing Angel movies. Certainly Joss would like to. David will take a bit more coaxing, but I think he will do it."

Ancier later attributed the cancellation of the series, which ended a five-year run on The WB last May, to pressure from producer 20th Century Fox Television for a quick answer as to the show's renewal. "They had pushed for an early decision on whether the show should come back or not," Ancier said. "Had they not pushed for the early renewal, or, conversely, if we had said, 'You know what? Let's wait till we get to the scheduling room in May and decide then,' ... the show may or may not have been back. But I think we would have had that opportunity to discuss it. I think the mistake that was made is that between us and 20th, we didn't wait until May. We just made the decision early based upon their request."

Actually it isn't a matter of hating the WB with me. It's a matter of not trusting them. Let's examine the Angel miniseries rumours, and you'll see why.

First of all, they had WB origins. Jordan Levin was the first to suggest Angel miniseries movies. Joss fired back, saying he hadn't seen any concrete offers.

Next a quote unquote reliable source appeared at the WB message boards saying the WB was in secret talks with Mutant Enemy concerning the miniseries. If the WB was serious about that, I have to wonder why they shut down the Angel boards at the WB.

Then a new rumour appeared courtesy of Mediasharx when a writer claimed he had been contacted from a quote unquote insider source from the WB. This time the miniseries was going to include a Faith spinoff. Their timing was bad though, because Tru Calling was re-signed just as the story broke. In other words the "insider" source was BS-ing.

Now enter Garth Ancier. He says

"Forget those old excuses we gave you for Angel being canceled:
Ratings weren't good enough
No possibillity for growth
Couldn't get sponsors interested
It was too old.
It was too expensive.

Let's ignore the fact that those can all be proven untrue. Now the story is, Fox was pushing us for word on whether or not Angel was going to be re-signed."

Well if that's the case why are we just hearing about it now? God knows the WB has never been shy about offering excuses as to why they cancelled Angel. It isn't like they have ever had so much love for Fox that they want to keep their secrets.

What are they saying anyway? Fox wanted to know if Angel was coming back, so the WB cancelled the series? Huh. That's a strange way to do business.

Or are they saying Fox was demanding a signature, or they'd walk? If that was the case why not say Fox has pulled out? Why take all the bad publicity for being the chump that cancelled the popular series, if you didn't cancel it? The story reeks.

So after spouting obvious BS like this Fox killed your series one, Ancier says, "Oh and by the way remember that old miniseries rumour we try to sell you guys on when we're looking for a way not to look like such big idiots? Well it's true again, OK?"

Until they show us a signature on a contract with Joss, the miniseries rumour is just a continuation of an old hoax.

Another reason I doubt the credibility of this story is because an Angel series of movies could be really good for the WB, and other than firing Levin, the WB has yet to show any evidence of knowing what's good for it.

I know it's too early to say that the mini series is gonna happen, but I kinda am leaning towards the WB being truthfull. Fox is known for being stupid pushy about their shows being picked up after their fifth year. Just look at Buffy, and the fiasco that ensued there.

The WB took a huge hit when they got rid of Angel. Their ratings plummeted(in shows other than Angel), and they recieved more negative feedback that they had ever gotten before. People are actually not watching that network because of the Angel cancelation.

Also Levin never said "we want to do miniseries". He merely hinted at it being a possibility, but it would appear that was only to lessen the blow of the cancelation.

Ancier has openly stated "We want to do the miniseries. We just have to convince Joss, and David Boreanaz". This makes a lot of sense to me. With that huge hit that they had when they lost Angel, the WB is scrambling to regain whatever viewership it had before the loss of Angel.

Angel was the only show that they had that had a gain in viewership. They gained 15% more viewers in their last year. Their other big show, Smallville...it had a 25% loss. A quarter of smallville's viewers stopped watching. That's terrible. At a time when the WB is fighting for viewers, they make stupid moves like canceling one of their highest rated shows and creating a backlash that they are still reeling from. The only way that they could hope to recoupe the lost viewers is it give those viewers what they want. More Buffy-verse.

The WB needs this miniseries more than Joss, and DB need it. Hence the convincing. ME is in the drivers seat in these negotiations it would appear. Also, something that lends credibility to the miniseries going through is James Marsters comments on Rove live(australian tv show). He said that Joss aproached him saying that he wanted to do a miniseries. Anthony Stewart Head has also stated that Joss wants to do a story around the Giles character.

I'm not saying trust the WB, but connecting the dots, it looks like they are sincere in wanting a mini-series. This means that there's some whoo, and definitely some hoo in there from me over this.

Isn't it great fun how 2 people can be using the exact same facts, and come to completely different conclusions? ::evil::

It's all in the interpretation.

Yes Fox was pushy about Buffy. They wanted more money. Ancier isn't claiming Fox wanted more money in the Angel case. He's saying Fox wanted to know if the WB was bringing Angel back. First of all, what's wrong with that? and second of all if we're going to hate Fox for that, we have to hate Joss too. He also wanted to know if Angel was coming back, and was asking Levin about it.

Ancier is trying to baffle us with BS. I don't trust him.

Yes the WB made a mistake when they cancelled Angel. They suffered all over the place; Ratings, bad blood from fans and critics, investors and advertisers no doubt demanding explanations, that sort of thing.

Should we now conclude from that the WB upper management has grown extra brain cells? The company that didn't know a good thing when it had it, now does?

I don't think so. I think Ancier's statement is just damage control. He's saying "It's all Fox's fault". The WB itself doesn't make mistakes (although it's interesting he seems to be admitting now, cancelling Angel was a mistake).

I'm not saying Fox are the good guys here. I'm saying the WB screwed up, they don't want to admit it, and they're blaming Fox.

The fact that Fox may have been nasty in the past doesn't make the WB creatures of sweetness and light.

I'm not the only one saying this. As I cruise about the Sci FI message boards I notice a general distrust of Ancier's statements. I think it's because so many of us are Star Trek fans. We remember the immortal words of Scotty, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."

The WB has lied about these Angel movies before. Why should we believe they're telling the truth now?

Because James Marsters says Joss is interested in miniseries spin-offs. Let's examine that.

First of all Ancier said nothing of spin-offs from the backup characters. He specifically mentioned Angel. He screwed up again. He should have tried to connect to the Marster's story. More people might have believed him.

I personally wouldn't have believed it though. I've noticed JM can be a little over anxious when reporting possible future projects.

This isn't the first time he's mentioned secret talks on a Spike movie, yet Joss insists nothing is happening. JM starts telling us how the inventor of the MP3 met him on a plane and gave him 50 million dollars to produce a Macbeth movie, and it turns out the truth is, an investor with the Fruenhoff institute suggested to Marsters he could help him try to find some money for the Macbeth movie JM has always wanted to do.

Next JM tells us four new movies are coming out based on Buffy/Angel characters. Well pardon me, if I don't jump up and cheer.

Personally I love JMs actiing, but I give his stories as much credibility as I would a 10 year olds, and I give Ancier's unctuous cajolings as much credibility as I would the proprietor of a 3 card Monty on a New York street corner.

There's one person I will believe if he chooses to say Mutant Enemy is in talks with the WB on a proposed series of Angel mini-movies. That's Joss Whedon. He's been noticeably quiet about all this.

He will be appearing at the Chicago convention August 13 though. I'm going to wait until I hear from there, before I light up the celebratory cigar.

It's not about the intelligence(or lack thereof)of the WB braintrust(if we can call it that)that I came to these conclussions. It's simple logic.

The WB knows it made a mistake. All the suits see is money, and negative feedback. Since the loss of Angel, they have lost viewership. Viewership = money. Naturally they want to recoupe their losses. The only logical way of doing this is to regain the viewership that they had lost. Logically, the only way to regain those viewers(and their trust), is to give those viewers that had left, what they want. Any suit with half a brain(which is more than what most suits have)would take 5 mins to look at viewer polls, and message boards and see that people want more Buffyverse. Hence the "let's give them a miniseries" attitude.

You have to read between the lines here. For a high ranking exec to be publically talking about how Angel might still be around if they had been given till may to think about it, tells me that they acknowledge that they made a mistake. It also tells me that as usual, ego's got in the way of art. Fox comes to The WB with their ego, and the WB responds with their ego, and poof show is gone.

To come out and say that they want a miniseries, but need to convince people is damage control. But it seems like there is some truth to what Ancier is saying. It just makes sense. What would the WB have to gain by saying the stuff about a miniseries if it weren't true? Nothing. All that would need be done would be for Joss or anyone at ME to discount those statements, and the WB would be worse off then they are right now. I see that there is at least some truth in what JM is saying, and what ASH is saying. And it walks along with what Ancier is saying.

The WB wants stars. They don't want fringe characters. Angel, Spike, Buffy, and Giles and Willow would get the ratings, and it would be a fight to get a movie based around the fringe characters. That is why he would want DB involved. Also I don't think there has been serious talks yet by both parties...Joss is too busy with Serenity right now to be bogged down in negotiations with a network.

Ancier is in a really bad position. Levin screwed things up pretty bad. People have violent distrust towards the WB now. No matter what anyone at the WB says, people aren't going to trust them. I'm sure Ancier could have a stack of $20 million dollars in front of him, and say Joss this is for you to make a miniseries, and people on this board would still say "pfffhht...probably isn't real money".

Don't trust everything you read, but trust that people are out to make a buck, and that by making a miniseries the wb would stand to make a buck. Especially if they could grab a piece of the miniseries' dvd sales. A place where Buffy slays.

Be careful then, because logic has very little to with operational procedure at the WB.

So why don't they then?

The most obvious first way of getting back the fans you scared off would be reinstating the Angel board at the WB Forums. They got a ton of bad blood when they did that, and not just from Angel fans. It threw the whole of the WB forums into chaos. So if you genuinely want to get your old fans back the first thing you would do would be to go to them and say "Hey some mistakes were made by the last guys. You can have your board back, and by the way we're trying to get in touch with Joss, because we want to work with him again".

That isn't what they did though. As far as I know there's still no Angel board at the WB, even though they still talk Angel on the general board. If you were the WB and you genuinely planned to come out with Angel movies in the near future wouldn't you want to give the Angel board back to WB Angel fans before you lose them?

Hey, you were the one that brought up logic. :wiggle:

You have to read between the lines here. For a high ranking exec to be publically talking about how Angel might still be around if they had been given until May to think about it, tells me that they acknowledge that they made a mistake.

It tells me the same thing. It tells me some other stuff too. It tells me what the mistake was.

Joss has admitted the WB was using Dark Shadows against him. (I can give you a link, if you want it). John Wells (West Wing producer) was supposed to be this big shot producer who was going to produce the new vampire show, that was going to make Joss and Angel unnecesssary. The WB would have preferred to have waited until May, because they wanted to see the Dark Shadows pilot.

Joss and Fox kept putting the pressure to them though, "No. If you're not bringing us back" they said, "tell us, so our people can start planning their future".

Ancier and Levin were so puffed up and proud that John Wells would even talk to them they said, "Who cares about Joss Whedon. We've got John Wells". They assumed if Wells was making it, Dark Shadows was going to be a giant. It wasn't though. The pilot was a dog.

So now Ancier and Levin have a problem. :happy07: They've told Whedon to hit the road. Wells is a dud. A gigantic Save Angel movement is on everything from Eonline to CNN, affiliates and sponsors are being bombarded by Save Angel, Levin's an idiot emails, and postcards.

What can they do? Damage control. Levin comes out and says well maybe we'll do an Angel movie. Joss says nonsense. David says he wouldn't be interested, even if they were serious.

Levin looks like an idiot. They fire Levin. Ancier comes in and says "Hey, I'm here now. Now the new Angel movie can begin."

Again let's read between the lines. He's saying "Jordan Levin screwed up, not me. It's different now".

Here's the thing though, it's not different. Ancier is spouting the same crap Levin was, and let's not forget, Garth Ancier didn't just all of a sudden appear at the WB in a beam of sunshine out of Heaven. He's been working side by side with Levin, a full partner in the skullduggery from the very beginning.

So, No, the story that was false when Levin told it, doesn't all of sudden become true when Garth Ancier tells it. You'll never convince me it does.

The person who can is Joss, and again, we probably won't hear from him until August 13th.

(Oh, and as far as DVD sales and such go. As I understand it, ME has a standing deal with Fox. The WB and others would love to get in there, of course, but they can't. That may be another of the real reasons Angel was cancelled.)

nerd4hire said:

I hardly think the message board on the wb's site is of much relevance. Angel was a WB show. Now it is no more. You don't find Roswell on the wb boards either. The fact is that Angel was cancelled...it wasn't in their line-up anymore, and the remaining people on the board were there pretty much to piss and moan about it's cancelation. I'm sure the WB discarded that board cause it reflected badly on the wb to have a whole section on their forums that was almost entirely pissed off with them.

nerd4hire said:

You're just being silly now. Joss never said that there wasn't an offer on the table. From every interview that I have seen from Joss regarding the TV movie thing. He always says the same thing. He's too busy right now to even think about it. There was a rumor that there were TV movies going to be made this year, and he discounted that saying that those were just rumors, but he never said he didn't want to do them or that there wasn't an offer in place from the WB. Just that he didn't really have time for them right now. David Boreanaz is a different story. He has been playing Angel now for 8 years. That's a long time to be playing a character. He, understandably so, wants to move on and try his hand at other roles. That doesn't mean that the TV movies are kyboshed. It does mean that Angel might not be in them. The WB would want the big names in whatever would be made, and DB is one of the 3 biggies that they would want. The bigger the name, the better the ratings.

nerd4hire said:

Here is the exact quote from Ancier : "[We] have an offer on the table to Joss to do movies...When Joss and David Boreanaz are both interested in doing it at the same time, I'm sure we will be doing Angel movies. Certainly Joss would like to. David will take a bit more coaxing, but I think he will do it."

Now to say "We have an offer on the table", that's saying that there is an offer for them to do the TV movies. If Joss, and David want to do them, they are available. Now we don't know the numbers that they are throwing around, but that's what negotiations are for. Every indication that Joss has given is that he's focused right now on his feature-film directorial debut, and isn't going to bother himself with negotiations right now.

nerd4hire said:

Ancier wasn't promoted to fix the Angel fiasco. He was promoted to help a stuggling network. And just because you work with someone, doesn't mean that you have the same philosophies on how to run a network.

nerd4hire said:

I'm not so sure that the subject of TV movies was false when Levin told it either. Joss never said "there's no offer on the table". Also, why would Levin, or Ancier bring up the subject of TV movies if they weren't interested at least on some level. It would be stupid to bring it up again if there wasn't truth to be found there. If they wanted people to forget about Angel then why keep brining it up. Time heals all wounds but not if you keep talking about it.

I wouldn't even expect anything to happen before september. Directing a movie is a big undertaking. Once Joss is free again, just wait and see if something happens on the tv movie front.

The intelectual property of the Buffy-verse is owned by Mutant Enemy. Now Fox(as the production company for the television show)owns the rights to the TV show. I'm not sure but a tv movie might fall under a different realm. Just the same as how Serenity isn't a fox production anymore, and is in fact a Universal production.

I don't expect anyone to trust someone like Ancier, but to believe that everything he says is a lie is a little extreme. I think people just have to take everything said with a grain of salt, add it to the facts, and draw their own conclusions

You're just being silly now. Joss never said that there wasn't an offer on the table.

Oh no I'm not, and oh yes he did:

May 07

"The rumored movies are so far just rumors," Whedon said in an interview at the Saturn Awards in Los Angeles. "There are no definite plans to do anything with Angel besides finish out the season as well and as hard as we can."

Joss Calls Movies Rumours

MAIDA: All right. Are there possibilities for TV-movies, or even a theatrical release, possibly down the road?
WHEDON: It's al theoretical right now. Uh, I suppose there are possibilities. Nobody's really coming at me right now. Uh, so I don't know how real they are.

Unpublished Jerome Maida/Joss Whedon Interview

Actually I didn't even have to look it up. You said it yourself.

There was a rumor that there were TV movies going to be made this year, and he discounted that saying that those were just rumors, but he never said he didn't want to do them or that there wasn't an offer in place from the WB

Well if there's an offer on the table it isn't a rumour is it? It's an offer on the table.

Joss calls them, "theoretical", 'rumours', and says, "Nobody's really coming at me right now.

There was no offer on the table with Levin. Ancier says there is one now, but I can only quote myself, "It's safe to put an offer on the table now. Joss is busy, and David isn't interested.

Where was the offer before? Ancier was still Chairman of The WB Television Network. Technically he hasn't been promoted, you know? All that's happened is when Levin left, Ancier took sole oversight of The WB.

Levin and Ancier appeared to have shared responsibility for the network under the old regime. To quote the Futon critic, "Jordan Levin, CEO of The WB, who equally shared running the Network with Ancier, has decided to shed his network executive duties'.

http://www.thefutoncritic.com/cgi/gofuton.cgi?action=newswire&id=6622

I notice Ancier doesn't come out and say "It was all Levin's fault". He can't. Levin was his protege. He brought him over from Disney.

Ancier has had his hand in this all along. Why is he talking about an Angel Movie now. Simple. He wants to try to erase the disgrace of the old regime, by talking about a movie that will never happen. Why do I think he's doing that? Because he and Levin have done it before.

Sorry man, but that's just not true.

Universal had a lot of problems wrestling the Firefly rights away from Fox. My understanding is they weren't cheap. I can find you a link if you like, but I don't have time right now.

However, I do happen to have a link handy to a letter to a site-owner that had her site shut down by Fox for copyright infringement. I think you'll see Fox does own the intellectual property rights, more specifically the copyright to both Buffy and Angel. Check it out.

Now as far as the WB message boards go, they're very relevant to this conversation. First of all you have to understand the furor that was created under the WB's roof when they shut that board down. Check this out:

Best of the WB Message Boards

You're saying the WB is anxious to make peace with the fans and get them back on board. You're saying that's one of the reasons they would be anxious to do an Angel Movie. If that were true why not make peace with the fans at their own website first. It wouldn't even cost anything.

Also if you were serious about investing money in an Angel Movie wouldn't you want easy access to a friendly and loyal core of fans.

True there's no Roswell site at WB, but there is a Buffy site at UPN, and Roswell's cancellation didn't cause anything close to the fuss Angel's did. Also, as far as I know the WB isn't talking about Roswell movies.

If the WB isn't willing to put the Angel board back up at their website, why should I believe they're serious about wanting a future connection to the series?

We could keep having the battle of quotes, but it really is pointless. Taken out of context, a quote can mean something completely different than what was originally intended. The truth is we don't know what's going on in the TV movie department. Before a contract is signed, anything said in the media can have seriously negative effects to towards those talks. People blabbing about negotiations has killed deals in the past.

I work for a production company that creates content for the G4 network. A little while back, comcast(the company that owns G4)bought techtv. It took over a month to finalize the deal, but up until that deal was finalized we couldn't say peep one about it. The public already knew about it...it was widely known from day one, but we were directed to act like we had no idea that comcast bought techtv because we were told that it could sour the deal.

This is all I see when I look at the tv movie front. The WB says that they have contacted Joss, and that they have an offer on the table. James Marsters shortly thereafter says that Joss told him that he he wanted him to be in a TV movie. And Anthony Stewart Head also says that he recently met with Joss and they talked about a Giles TV movie. All this doesn't spell that a tv movie series is a done deal, but it looks like Joss has recieved this offer, and is right now bouncing ideas off of people to see who is interested. Figuring out what he could do with TV movies. Again though, he's busy right now with firefly, and I doubt he would be able to take time out of his busy schedule to be in hardcore negotiations at this point in time.

I found this in the news section of the official BBC Buffy website.
Official Buffy BBC website said:
Network chairman offers Joss TV movie deal.

Garth Ancier, chairman of The WB network, has approached Joss Whedon to make a series of Angel telefilms.

"[We] have an offer on the table to Joss to do movies," Ancier told the press during the network's autumn press preview in Los Angeles. "When Joss and David Boreanaz are both interested in doing it at the same time, I'm sure we will be doing Angel movies. Certainly Joss would like to. David will take a bit more coaxing, but I think he will do it."

Ancier also revealed that the WB weren't entirely to blame for Angel's cancellation in the first place. He claimed that pressure from producer 20th Century Fox Television forced their hand.

"They had pushed for an early decision on whether the show should come back or not. Had they not pushed for the early renewal, or, conversely, if we had said, 'You know what? Let's wait till we get to the scheduling room in May and decide then,' ... the show may or may not have been back. But I think we would have had that opportunity to discuss it. I think the mistake that was made is that between us and 20th, we didn't wait until May. We just made the decision early based upon their request."

So that means that there will be Angel movies as soon as everyone is ready to make them at the same time :bounce:.

I pretty much doubt it. I don't trust the WB...they are just morons, read this:

WB Excecutives DO NOT Know their Shows!

Airing shows that you're not familiar with is not very reasonable, and it seems that two WB executives haven't a clue when it comes to many of their own series'.

WB shows class with 'Jack & Bobby'

LOS ANGELES: ODDLY enough, the WB didn't get a single Emmy nomination of note.

C'mon. Like we count Outstanding Makeup for a Series (non-prosthetic) for "Gilmore Girls."

And "Everwood" had to reach out to James Earl Jones to get a nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.

"Angel," which deserved a couple of nominations at least for writing, didn't get a mention.

But that could well change next year when "Jack & Bobby" pops up on the schedule. The WB proves it can act like a grown-up with this show that should, by all rights, be on a network like CBS. But you grab quality where you can these days.

(Lord, did I just age myself by identifying with the geriatric network?)

Awesome actress Christine Lahti ("Chicago Hope") and her husband, former "West Wing" director and producer Thomas Schlamme, have teamed with "Dawson's Creek" and "Everwood" creator Greg Berlanti for one of the best new dramas of the season. The series is about two extraordinary brothers, one of whom grows up to become one of the nation's best-loved presidents.

WB executives Garth Ancier (who helped build both Fox and the WB networks) and producer David Janollari told critics gathered here for the annual summer press tour they don't want people older than 34 to feel like they have to hide the fact that they watch the WB.

So the WB is now welcoming the old folk -- as long as they don't scare off the network's target group of 12- to 34-year-olds.

It was disconcerting, however, to discover that these two men apparently don't watch the shows on their own network.

In a session with Ancier and Janollari, Janollari admitted he'd never seen the mean-spirited reality show "Superstar," which basically made horrible singers think they had some pipes.

Not that we blame anyone for missing that little gem, but shouldn't the guy in charge of entertainment at least watch what's on his network?

"It's in a pile on my desk," explains Janollari. "I've been trying to get to it."

Yeah. Welcome to our world.

When questions came out about "Charmed" storylines, Ancier ran for cover as he explained he really didn't keep up with the show. He also didn't know who was on "Everwood," or ... well, we won't bore you. You get the picture.

But he did know that although he canceled "Angel," he does want the vampire series back as TV movies. What a bloodsucker.

"Certainly, (creator/producer Joss Whedon) would like to," Ancier says.

"David (Boreanaz, who played the title character) will take a bit more coaxing, but I think he will do it."

Oh, and former "Party of Five" cutie Scott Wolf will be a new regular on "Everwood," playing the new doctor in town. Wolf still looks like a teen, although he's 36 and a newlywed. He hooked up with Kelley Limp of "Real World: New Orleans," who was dating a doctor.

"I had to go back to work," Wolf says smiling. "She likes to shop ... a lot."

Talking about dating, "Survivor" and "Apprentice" creator Mark Burnett seems totally smitten by his new girlfriend, Roma Downey ("Touched By An Angel").

And why are we talking about Burnett and the WB?

He's got a horrible sitcom on the air this fall, based on his pre-"Survivor" life as a nanny. The show, "Commando Nanny," has pretty much clinched the bottom of the barrel award this tour. Burnett seems to accept the fact that this show is the soap scum in the bathtub of TV.

"Hey, you can't always win," he says. "Besides, what do I know about scripted TV shows? I thought it was OK."

The other WB series is a my-family-owns-a-ski-resort drama called "The Mountain." Goldie Hawn's handsome son Oliver Hudson stars as the wayward son who returns home to discover his grandfather has willed him the place, much to the chagrin of his hard-working brother.

Hudson says he doesn't mind being asked about his mom, because she's a great person. But he was a little concerned when he found out about the dangers of riding dirt bikes. Hudson's character is a motocross champ and he says he's more a fan of fishing. But he decided to get out and learn how to ride a dirt bike.

"It was a lot of fun," Hudson says. "I even started jumping (the small hills) and that was great."

Then he learned that often times when a dirt bike rider falls after a jump, the helmet can break a collarbone.

"Maybe I'll just stick to the shots of me driving away," he says with a laugh.

More promising for those who like down-home humor is "Blue Collar TV," a sketch comedy show starring Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall and Larry the Cable Guy.

And Drew Carey is back in the improv biz with San Francisco's Greg Proops, among others, in a show that combines improv with animation. Think of it as Bugs Bunny meets "Whose Line Is It Anyway?"

This is a comment about the article [from Slayerverse]:

They don't watch their own shows? Now that Angel's gone, I don't watch any of their shows. Can I get hired there? I promise not to watch or pay attention to anything and let the network become over run with crappy reality tv series. Plus, I guarantee you another crappy season of Smallville, Charmed, Seventh Heaven and much more crappy TV shows. If I'm hired as a WB Executive, I promise you all, I will run that network out of business!

He is just right...
