When Buffy died in season 1, Kendra was called. When Kendra died in season 2, Faith was called. But Buffy was still alive. So when Buffy died in season 5 she didn't call another slayer because technically in the slayer line she was dead from before and the slayer she was supose to call had already been called. So how come [mainly in season 7] everyone is talking about how Buffy's death will result in a potentials possible calling? It would be Faith wouldn't it?

Buffy's death won't result in anything. Since she died, the line has been broken and as far as we know, has run through kendra and then faith.

Now if faith died, another slayer would be called. That won't happen now because after willow's spell nothing has been the same.

As for season 7, they *thought* that Buffy's death would activate a slayer, that's all. I don't remember giles saying that and the potentials aren't exactly experts.

I can't remember which of the writers it was (probably David Fury, definitely wasn't Joss though) that explained about this situation, but it wasn't so much a mistake as a simplification for the sake of storytelling.

The writing team all knew that it had been established that Buffy had already fulfilled her place in the slayer line by her death having called Kendra. Rather then explain that detail in every episode, they decided it was unneccessary to discuss the slayer line and a potential being called, so they decided to gloss over it.

From the perspective of Buffy, it was just more practical to say that her death would call a new slayer than it was to try to go into a lot of details about how it was now actually Faith whose death mattered. Especially because she thought Faith was out of the picture and wouldn't play any part in the potentials' training. Why confuse them all further?

Joss explained it.

And we as the viewers know that buffys death wont activate another slayer, but the question is does Buffy and everyone else. None of them have really studied slayers except for Giles.

Since Buffy has been the main slayer for so long, people just think that when she finally does die another will be activated again, and even if Buffy knew her death wont activate another slayer, she was using it to scare the other potentials.

Just had a new (and potentially cruddy) idea to throw in the mix, what if when Buffy was bought back to life SHE was the new Slayer that was called. I dunno if Slayerness is prescribed at birth (guessing it is becasue of the potentials) or handed to you when your a teen but Buffy was both re-born and a teen (well 20 but hey, older than a teen) when she was ressurected. Its never been said that there are some big spirits that come and get you and go "you are the Slayer, I insert this power" so the fact Willow bought her back doesn't matter. The only flaws I see in this is, why didn't this happen with her first re-birth and why did it take so long?

-edit-

Thinking about it, it has been suggested that Buffy was stronger after fighting the master and coming back to life, so maybe the Slayer strength was put back into her again, like twice the slayerness. So then Kendra and Buffy are still Slayers who call other Slayers when they die, except Buffy called herself (okay so im starting to think this theory is crazy)

But going on the Buffy explaining to potentials standpoint, she did say "Kill all the potentials, kill Faith and kill me and the slayer line is out", now she could be saying it in the wrong order but it still holds true, if the potentials are killed first it doesnt matter who is killed, Faith or Buffy, neither of them will be passing on the power.

In response to your theory, I would say it didn't happen with the first "resurrection" in Prophecy girl because there was no mystical force at work. If Buffy was reinserted into the slayer line I think it was through the mystical properties at work in Willow's spell.

But it's just speculation 🙂

doesn't make sense to me because buffy had been gone for months, while next slayers are being called instantly.

Yeah I thought about that too, and we talked a lot about that theory in this thread..

I agree with Cordelia's explanation about why the same thing didn't happen in season 1. The only thing that doesn't work with that theory (in my opinion) is Buffy's flatline in Villains...

I'm not at home now, but does anyone know if Villains has any commentary on the DVD? I'd really like to check it out if it does because there was a lot of debate regarding the flat line in the previous thread 🙂

No it doesn't have any commentary. At least not the region 2 DVD, but I don't think the region 1 does either. Irritating... I haven't heard anyone (Joss or anyone else that matters, heh) say anything about the flat line...

Tthere's no commentry on the UK DVD. I'm not sure about the US DVD but as far as I've heard I don't think there is one...which is a shame! ::crying::

I can understand why Buffy didnt face any major villans in S6, if you heard the slayer beat a HellGod, you probably would stay away from her terrortory for awhile, or atleast continue viewing her in secretecy trying to find a moment of weakness so you can go strike, Since im sure some big bads heard about Glorys defeat in Sunnydale, and well with the buffybot around, demons thought the slayer was still alive.

Well, as others have said previously, "here we go again".

I have to admit the issue does interest me, so I'll take another go at it, and hope something new comes to light.

One thing before we begin in earnest though. There's this...

We'll need a link on that. In the past people have posted info they thought they heard on this subject and when it was checked into the quote either didn't exist, or it was made pre-S-6.

The central premise of the "line re-activated in Bufffy", viewpoint is that it happens after S-6. Up until that point, yes the line passes through Faith, and only Faith.

As Primal Slayer pointed out "Joss explained it". He explained it in an interview that happened towards the end of S-5. The link to that is in one of the other threads that have been linked to earlier on this thread. Marti Noxon also explained it previous to that. I think that one's there too.

If someone in the know said anything after S-6 though, that states Faith and only Faith can pass on the slayer line in S-7 we're still waiting to see it.

S-7 does appear to say the rules concerning the activation of the slayer line have changed since Willow's spell in the Bargaining. But we'll get into that once I see if this David Fury quote exists. That could change everything.

Agree, want to see that quote, I'd love to finally know the "truth" about this, I doubt that'll ever happen though. I'm too tired and confused at the moment to participate in this discussion, lol, damn, since I love it (although I think I have said most of things I have to say about the subject in one post/thread/board or another, hehe).
