Joss promised a Buffy Season 8 comic series coming which he says will be canon. That much is official. He announced it. Here's a new one from All the Rage, which from what I hear at Whedonesque.com from people who claim to know is supposed to be pretty reliable.

Speaking of Joss Whedon related concepts; I've heard a few things about the forthcoming Buffy season eight comics. As Whedon himself noted a few weeks ago, the first mini is going to be four issues and he is also laying out the story for the rest of the season. I've been told that the storyline is roughly 20 issues, spread across multiple miniseries and that Whedon will be recruiting some of his former Buffy writers to handle the bulk of the writing chores, though Whedon may return to write the "season finale" himself.

I'm also told that the first issue starts with Buffy and some of the other Slayers on a covert ops mission"¦

You are best for finding news!!! This makes me so happy, Buffy writes will be writing it, yey!! And Joss had better write the season finale, and 20 issues thats close to a full season.

I don't know anything about comic books, how long wold it take for 20 comics to come out? I'm guessing they will not be weekly 🙂
 
They're monthly, usually. Sometimes even longer.

It'll be over a year and a half for Season Eight, I guess? Hope Joss gets some great pencillers. I'd assume lots of artists would be clamoring for this gig.

Yeah I would too, considering you will have comic book fans and then fans of Buffy who don't read comics and will want to buy this (Like me 🙂) It kinda has to be successful - right?

Nothing has to be successful. For instance you cite Comic Book fans and Buffy Fans both buying this.
Well as a fan of Buffy, I can say i won't be buying, or reading, this as far as i'm aware right now.
There are also comic fans who don't like Buffy, or indeed Comics that are born from a TV Show.

I'm not saying this will fail, i'm just saying that many factors are still involved.
 
Astonishing X Men fans will probably want to check it out too. Joss won them over. And Dia I bet you will take a peek at this. It's canon man, and the buzz will be mighty. But you can't not check it out just to win the bet, OK. :hehe:
 
I think Joss's work with Cassaday in Astonishing X-men can be as beautiful and artful...and even more purely cinematic at times than Joss's shows were.

It's so fun to read Joss's quips in dialogue balloons. This wouldn't be anything dumbed-down I don't think. But I can understand wanting to leave these alone, let Buffy rest.

I know there are many comic book geeks who don't care for Buffy at all. It'll be interesting to see the sales figures...
 
Well yeah it doesn't have to be successful, but I'd be surprised if it wasn't.

Like I know people who buy comics and some of just but whatever they see whether they like it or not. And I wouldn't expect every Buffy fan to read them, but I could see a good number doing so, some of whom wont be regular comic book readers. also people buy them depending on the writer, so like N4H said some of the X-Men fans might want to check it out. But they also buy according to the artist.

Although thinking about it now, I also know people who just watch Buffy on TV, wouldn't go on Message boards or search for Buffy news or go into shops that sell comics (there a very specific shops over here) so they wouldn't even know of the comics existence.

Bet or not, as i stand now on the subject, i will not be getting these.
Granted none of us can say what will happen in the future, but i truly doubt it.
I'm not a fan of comics. Even worse is the fact that the last comic I bought was 'Old Friends' the Angel comic and that was terrible.

I've not been impressed with any recent books from the verse, and granted they weren't by Joss but honestly I don't see how relevant that is. All his name to it means is, thats his story.

Unlike alot of people on this board, I don't think the sun shines out of his 'arisole'. Personally, I don't even think he was the best one on either shows. He had an idea that some other fantastic people helped develop.

No, i'm 100% sure at the moment that i'll not see these.
 
But the comics are being done the same way, He has the main idea and his writers will be fleshing out the storylines, the same as the TV series.

I'm also not a fan of comics, I think there way to short and you don't get enough out of them, I have only ever bought one, a pokemon one, like a million years ago. But I read Fray and liked it, I didn't think it was the greatest, and it wasn't as good as his TV series. But I did also read his X-Men comics and was pleasantly surprised, I quiet liked the writing, and the characters and thought the whole thing worked very well.
 
I do feel"”coming back to comics just a little bit as an adult"”that there's not enough "there" there. I want more text, more characterization, dialogue. But if you find the right combination of artist and writer together and it clicks with you...they can really get into a groove and you can just go with it.

Joss and Cassaday, Brian K Vaughn and Pia Guerra (Y: The Last Man), even Captain America by Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting is pretty good stuff. Little 10 minute snippets of entertainment for 3 bucks hardly seems worth anyone's while, but they're fun to read as collected volumes, I think. But people like what they like...

As far as the Buffyverse goes, I always thought Joss's writing was some of the most...lyrical and sort of self-contained and "complete" of the 'verse writers. A kind of clarity of vision and inventiveness. Jane Espenson too in her way. I like Tim Minear's darkness. He does isolation and angst well. So many great writers assembled for those two shows.

But I ain't no writer. I don't understand the process really...
 
Well I'll be checking it out! Its something right! sure its not another season, or a film, but its something. AND its canon. if ever another season/spin off/ movie is made, the events unfolding in the season 8 comics will be a part of the story...thats enough reason to inspire me to buy it. I've read some buffy comics. I quite liked them. Nothing like the show, but its a completely different medium. My favourite part is the story. The artwork sometimes annoyed me, and maybe its that i dont really appreciate artists different styles but in my opinion if it doesnt look like the character its supposed to be then somethings wrong! lol.

Are any story details released yet? From memory I recall mentioning of the Immortal and from that I'm guessing Italy is the setting. I'm not a comic book guy but by miniseries does that mean like separate stories. so there might be a buffy dawn in italy miniseries, where another might follow willow in kennedy in....peru was it? I forget. I'm also thinking its set before not fade away. I think Joss will not want to annoy fans by including something that might reveal details of what happened after the alley. I think whatever is fdecided happened post NFA, it needs to be shown through a movie or another season! My opinion anyways.
 
Here's a little bit about the artist Joss selected. The last line is encouraging, but carefully nurtured cynicism won't allow me to accept it.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- He wasn't a fan when the show was on the air, but Georges Jeanty loves Buffy the Vampire Slayer now.

Jeanty, who had never watched the show through its seven seasons on The WB and UPN, was Buffy creator Joss Whedon's hand-picked selection as artist for Dark Horse Comics' upcoming Buffy series, which serves as a "Season 8," picking up where the show ended on UPN.

"They were nice enough to send me the DVDs from the last two seasons," Jeanty told the Continuum. "And I really missed out on something, how good it actually is and how comic-related it is."

Jeanty, currently working on The American Way for WildStorm, has never worked with Dark Horse. He received an e-mail from editor Scott Allie that got the ball rolling.

"He said that Joss wanted me for the book," Jeanty said. "I really couldn't believe it until I got an e-mail from Joss, saying he liked my work. He's a comics guy and mentioned he liked my stuff on Bishop."

Jeanty said he will be using likenesses for the series, which presents a challenge.

"It's hard, only because if you nail the likenesses and that makes it look like a photograph," Jeanty said. "And a photograph is a still image. With story-telling, you have to create the illusion of movement.

"So hopefully I can keep the comic-book element and find a happy medium."

Jeanty said Buffy will probably be a series of mini-series. He said he isn't sure when the book will be scheduled.

"Dark Horse would love to have it for the holidays, and I think it would be perfect for Halloween," he said

Thanks for the link to the pics. His work is really different piece to piece, some of it I really don't like, but others, like his work on the Gambit comic, is really good.
 
It sounds like there's going to be some kind of display of the S-8 art or something at ComicCon. There's even some story preview.

So what's going on in the extended Buffyverse? Well, you may recall the show ended with the creation of an army of Slayers. Now they're organized, and the tide has turned in favor of the good guys. Ah, but you know how much Whedon hates winners: Soon an "old enemy" surfaces (Dark Horse is cagey on Big Bad's identity), and Dawn starts "experiencing serious growing pains."

Ok now I'm really excited!!! The story sounds excellent, and yey it's an old enemy that's cool. Also Dawn with growing pains, do think she's gonna start developing powers of some sort (Hey DDLM were you privilege to some info before us)

Also I love the art!! It's really good, like I really love it.
 
I'll give credit, that artwork is pretty cool. i'd actually love that as a poster.
But still not sold enough to want to buy it.

Anyway, there was a few interesting bits of information.

What, no not at all. Joss took his idea from my fic🙂

LOL. But I gotta say, its kind of a natural progression of Dawns character from the season 7 storyline she had.

Also, with this seemingly regarding Dawns powers(as one of the themes), who is offering GREAT odds that the 'Soon an "old enemy" surfaces' is Glory.

As i explored in Old Friends, Glory was someone that Dawn had to face, to finally accept who she was, the power she held and the ability to get out from under her sisters shadow.
 
It's gonna be so nice to see a "genuine" Buffy comic, with an A-list artist and Joss at the helm.

The thing about comics, they can obviously be much more ambitious, sprawling, imaginative with the concepts and visuals cos there are no budgetary constraints. Joss can get epic, cinematic if he wants to.

Hopefully, the characterizations will be just as strong and quirky as ever.
