One Night In London
London 1888
We almost fell out the pub that night my next meal and I. We'd been drinking for what seemed like days, but in reality was only hours. We'd drank, and drank. God, I don't even remember what we'd been drinking. I think it was gin, but I don't recall.
Her name was Sally. Not an unpleasant looking girl to be honest with you. She had, not a beautiful face but the type of face that you'd be happy to be seen in public with in broad daylight. If I'd been alive, I would have surely courted her given the opportunity. Her body, now that was something else. She had a full, buxom figure and she had curves in all the right places "“ you know what I mean? Her hair was the brightest red I'd ever seen and in the gas light it positively shone - I think she mentioned that she'd washed it only yesterday as last night she'd seen her special friend who she said came from near the Mile End Road. Her eyes were Hazel and she was, I think, the only girl I've ever eaten that had Hazel coloured eyes"¦ shame that really, she was a delicious little bit that I would have liked to have kept around. Oh well.
Sally had told me that she had a small room quite nearby and that she really wanted me to take her home. She had whispered in my ear that she wanted me to stay with her that night "“ to make sure she made it through the night. She didn't explain why, nor did I ask. I simply told her that I'd see she got home safely.
As we made our way through the narrow gas lit streets to her lodgings, she was telling me stories about someone who was lurking in the dark doing terrible things to the locals. As drunk as I was, I wasn't really taking much notice to be honest, my brain was concentrating on making my legs work properly, but I did notice that she kept on looking about the place "“ searching for someone who obviously wasn't there. A thought crossed my mind at one point that she might be talking about me for a second or two, but I dismissed it out of hand as I'd not been to this part of London since 1882.
A few minutes passed and eventually we staggered into a small courtyard that was set back off the main road near Mitre Square. The gas light from the street illuminated only a small area of the courtyard leaving the rest of the small area bathed in shadows deeper and darker than I had ever seen before or since. Had I been alive, I might have been truly scared of the dark right then.
As she fumbled in her skirts to retrieve the key for her door, I felt my head spin with anticipation of what was to come. "Silly me," she said with a slight slur. "I thought I'd took the key with me when I went out this morning, but I didn't!" She laughed and reached upward to the top of the wooden door frame and after a few seconds of feeling about, her hand grasped a key.
The door opened with a creak and we fell into the room landing in a heap in front of a smouldering fire. We kissed and I eventually dragged myself off her to close the door, as I did so taking the key from the outside of the door and locking it from within, I heard a clock some where nearby chime once. Turning, I found that she'd crawled over to the fireplace and had thrown another log on the dying fire. It crackled and popped as her breath fanned the embers causing new flame to erupt.
"Come on Spike," she said, "help me build up the fire. It's cold in here." I obliged by putting another log in the grate. Kneeling by her side I pretended to blow on the fire, and as far as I'm aware, she didn't notice that I had no breath.
Placing my hand gently on her left cheek, I turned her head to face me and I sweetly and gently kissed her on the lips. Her breath felt so sweet and warm on my cold face and I was almost certain that I felt my skin burst out in goose pimples as we kissed. I remember feeling the blood coursing through my veins and it seemed to me that it was on fire "“ the excitement of the moment I suppose, but at the time, it felt as though it might have been something more.
We made love on the floor in front of the fire. She whispered sweet nothings in my ear and I reciprocated. The love making was not the worst, nor the best I'd ever experienced, but Sally was an uninhibited girl and she showed me things that night that I'd never ever thought of. Things, I'd make good use of in the decades to come.
Eventually she fell asleep in my arms, a thin blanket covering our naked bodies. I watched her sleep, her chest moving ever so slightly as she breathed in and out with a steady rhythm, her hair covering her shoulders and one portion of her face. Slowly and delicately, I moved her hair away from her neck exposing the sweet, tender white skin. Instinctively, I licked my lips and as I did so, I transformed sinking my teeth into her flesh. She whimpered slightly as I bit down on her, sucking the life giving blood from her tender young body.
As I continued to suck the slightly bitter, warm liquid from her, I thought about siring her "“ giving her life ever lasting, but thoughts of Drusilla entered my head.
Dru and I had been fighting and I'd stormed out the crypt at sundown intent on breaking free of her influence. I'd wandered the streets for short while, found a drunk slumped up against a wall"¦ and after having a snack relieved him of seven pennies. Enough money to enable me to get steaming drunk I thought as I sought out the nearest pub "“ in which I'd met Sally.
The thought of introducing Sally to Dru and her reaction to my latest addition to our small clan soon drove the thought of siring her out of my head "“ Dru would go ballistic - again. Heck, she was mad enough at me already and I didn't want to add fuel to her already blazing anger. She'd even gone so far as to stake the last poor lass I brought home "“ a real shame, as I thought that Annabel would have made a fine companion for the both of us. Brining into the fold another female wouldn't be the best idea I thought to myself, and biting down harder still, I drained Sally dry.
"˜Shame,' I thought to myself. I could have seen myself raising mayhem with Sally and Dru, but I knew deep down that it wouldn't have worked out.
Never once, till the deed was done, did the thought of leaving Dru and running off with Sally cross my mind. I cursed out loud at my lack of fore-thought and stupidity as I dressed quickly.
As I locked the door to that small shabby room I heard the clock some where off in the distance chime three times. Reaching up to the door frame, I left the key in the same place Sally had gotten it from and I strode off back toward Mitre Square.
The streets were deserted which was strange I thought. In other parts of London at this time of night there'd be people wandering about in various states of drunkenness, but here in Whitechapel, the place was like a ghost-town. I meandered through various tight corridors making my way back toward the crypt I shared with Dru in Bethnal Green cemetery.
As I made my way down one of those small, darkly lit and quite eerie corridors that led from one part of Whitechapel to another I heard a muffled scream coming from one of the small courtyard areas to my left.
Curiosity hit me more out of my drunkenness and that fact that my head was still spinning from feeding on Sally. I stepped into the shadows and almost instantly disappeared from view. Silently, I stood and listened for any further noise that might betray the location the scream had emanated from. From behind a curtained window I caught a glimpse of gas light then as if from no-where several big, circular stains appeared on the gauzelike material, spreading like ripples on a pond.
As I moved cautiously forward out of the shadow toward the small window I heard a gurgle and what I knew was the final exhalation of air. Some bugger was killing someone in there in thought to myself and I saw red!
Another vampire killing in my area! How dare they! Didn't they understand the code of the vampires? You don't step into someone else's patch and start indiscriminately taking out the fast food. Of course, I was guilty of that very crime against the vampires that lived in Whitechapel, but hey, I was all hyped up and ready for a scrap.
I kicked at the door and it burst open. What I saw made even me feel nauseous. There was blood everywhere. And when I say everywhere, I mean everywhere "“ it was all over the floor, up the walls, it was splattered on the low ceiling. I don't think that there was any part of that small, dark, smelly room that didn't have blood on it at that point. However, the majority of it was covering a man who at the moment the door came in had turned his head to see who was interrupting his jollies.
He looked in his mid to late thirties and although not as ruggedly handsome as yours truly, he wasn't the worst looking bloke I've ever seen. His eyes, I remember stared blankly at me, there seemed to be no emotion there at all. I remember thinking later that he looked as though he'd been possessed by a demon of some sort. I rushed at his fists clenched ready for fight!
A smile appeared on his face as I rushed toward him and that's when I noticed the blade in his hand, bloody silver glinting in the gas light. Drops of blood dripped off it onto the stone floor making splashing noises that were almost deafening in the silence. With lightening quick reflexes the blade flashed in front of my face at neck height "“ this bugger was intent on doing me some major harm I realised as I checked my charge and dodged out of the way of blade.
He hissed something at me that I didn't understand and threw himself bodily at me, I only just managed to sidestep him whilst throwing a wild swing at his head. My fist caught the side of his temple and he went down. Dazed slightly, he lost his grip on the blade and it clattered onto the floor. I swept over to him and laid a few well placed punches in and around his head, which I have to say he took with ease.
His facial expression changed from the smile that had adorned his mouth to one of sheer hatred as he pushed me away from him bodily with a massive surge of strength. I was thrown backward about five or so feet giving him time to recover the blade from where it had landed and get back onto his feet.
I lay on the floor winded as he stepped slowly toward me, blade flashing through the air quicker than anything I'd ever seen before or since. The look of pure hatred on his fate is still etched into my mind, as I tell you this now, but his eyes"¦ they really scared me, and I'm not scared by many things that inhabit this planet. But him. He really scared me.
His eyes now stared at me from behind huge black circles. Gone were his pupils. There was nothing there except black. Deep, emotionless black. I truly felt that he was possessed at this point and felt like fleeing to save my own skin "“ but I didn't. I couldn't. He was blocking the door and I wouldn't have been able to get past him without him and that blade connecting with my body some place.
He approached me slowly, as I've said. That blade swishing through the air. "˜This is it,' I thought to myself, "˜I'm going out right here and now.' Seconds later I felt a huge surge of pain shoot through my body. Out of nowhere he'd scored a hit on my arm. He cut me and I didn't even see it coming.
"If I'm going for the long sleep," I told him through gritted teeth, "I'm bloody well going to make a fight of it!" I transformed and leapt to my feet, fists clenched and swung a fist at his face. My fist connected with his jaw and he staggered backward slightly, shaking his head as if to clear cobwebs out of his addled brain.
I took the opportunity to flash another punch into his gut to which he doubled up slightly. I grabbed a handful of his hair and slammed his face downward into my rising knee. I heard bone break as his face made contact with my knee and he gasped in pain, dropping the blade as he moved both his hands toward his face to examine the damage I'd caused.
His nose was broken. Splattered more like. It was cut from the tip right the way up and blood was pouring out. He screamed in agony, and me being me, I took this as my queue and starting wailing into him even more with punches and when I could, the occasional kick.
I could feel the bloodlust surging in my veins now as my blood pumped around my body giving me strength. My flailing fists hit him so many times that when I eventually stopped hitting him I was certain that there was no was he was going to be able to get up.
I was wrong.
His motionless body stirred slightly and a thought crossed my mind "“ what did I have to do to this guy to keep him down. Again I wailed on him as he tried to get back to his feet. Kicks to the groin, face, chest all put him down again, but with tenacity, he kept on trying to get back up. I stamped on his fingers and feet, hearing the small bones crunch under the force of my attack. But still he kept on trying to get up.
I looked around the room for something, anything to hit him with to keep the bugger from getting back up. A chair. A small table. I hit with both of those things but he kept on moving. My temper had gotten the better of me now and I went wild once more. Kicks and punches rained down on him and then in the corner of my eye I saw the blade glinting at me.
I scrambled away from him and picked up the sodden blade. It felt heavy in my hand "“ much heavier than it should have been, but I dismissed this out of hand. If I'd of known the significance of that blade I'd of kept it afterward, but all I wanted to do was get rid of it once the problem at hand had been sorted.
Throwing myself across the room at him I slashed back and forth at his body as he was still trying get to his feet. I must have cut him a thousand times in various places, the blood flowing free from him after each and every stroke of the blade.
Eventually he stopped moving. I remember driving the blade deep into his chest and I knew that I'd pierced his heart with his own weapon. I sighed both in victory and in sorrow at the same time, knowing that I'd been in the fight of my life when suddenly his eyes snapped open!
I grabbed his head and twisted it sharply"¦ Bones cracked and I think I nearly rove the thing off his shoulders, but as he stared blankly now at the floor to my right an overpowering stench began to emanate from him. The smell was God awful"¦ I wretched and fell backwards, landing on my arse a few feet away.
His body burst into flames right before my eyes and then he simply disappeared. Poof. Gone. The blade, his clothes, everything. I shook my head in disbelief, but it had happened. He was gone. Gone where I don't know before you ask.
After I'd stood up and I'd had time to survey the scene of carnage that lay before me, I wretched for the first time since my death. Then the thought hit me. I had to get out of there "“ and quick! I ran at the fear of being discovered by the local Peelers or, worse yet, by the vigilantes'. Running as though my undead life depended on it, I heard the clock chime four.
I made it back to Dru and the safety of the cemetery and I recounted the tail of what had occurred. Dru enjoyed the story, and told me that I'd been a brave boy! The cheeky bitch! I'm sure she thought I'd been smoking opium and had dismissed what I'd told her as fantasy.
Anyway, the next night I got a newspaper from someplace, thinking that there would definitely be something in there regarding the scene of absolute horror I'd witness in that room "“ heck, there might have even been a piece on Sally too "“ I hoped.
The headline on the front of the paper stood bold and clear:
Jack The Ripper Strikes Again, Vanishing Without A Trace! Police Baffled Yet Again!
As I stood reading the story I thought "“ if only I could say something"¦ I'd be a hero!
