I was just wondering what did everyone answer when asked this question when you where a child?

What do you what to be when you grow up?

What do you do now ?

Are you living your childhood dreams?

I wanted to be a Goonie or witch that went to Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches and archaeologist and even sometimes said a Ghostbuster xxx

Many reps for the Miss Cackle reference. When "Worst Witch" came out on DVD, I was so pumped. Got my Goonies lunchbox, and can't wait for the Ghostbuster Wii game! :Þ

I always wanted to be a fireman.

Karma for being able to do what I couldn't stomach. Docs would just break my heart all the time! (Assuming Docs there is the same thing as Docs here, 'cause I don't actually know where you're from!)
When I was young I wanted to be a stand up comedian, I was a weird kid haha.

Now I am nothing, not working, so maybe I will be a stand up comedian, doubt it though, because I AM NOT FUNNY.

HAHA.

Ok.

Professional football (soccer) player. Not that uncommon. Think at least 70% of the boys in my school wanted that. The dream crashed for good at 15 then I had to quit playing due to bad achilles' tendons. Have later in life found out that the doctors didn´t think I was gonna be able to play at all. So I guess 9 years is an achievement on it´s own. But the dream was gone long before that. Didn´t take a genius to get that I wasn´t the best there ever was. But young and naive I held on to that dream way too long. 🙂

What do I do now? Then I´m not unemplyed I´m a leisure time teacher. Not a kind of job that is very common (if at all) outside scandinavia. Lets just say that I´m a teacher that concentrates on the social learning more than language, math and such.

Didn´t really get that I wanted to do this until I became an adult but now I don´t want any other job. Working with kids give so much. Sure, I can bitch about my job 24/7 since there´s so many things that can be done better. I want to give the kids a good start in life damn it. But if unemployment has learned me anything it´s that I wouldn´t change it for the world.

Long enough rant?

Thats not rant, thats inspirational. Kids need both heart and mind teachers. I admire you and your profession, nice job.

I work with kids as you know most of the boys I work with have the same dream

You know what I think of your profession, TK. I don't understand how celebrities can make millions of dollars, while the teachers who created them have to scrimp and save. Teachers are my heroes.

Do you bith about yours as much as I bitch about mine?
I guess you can say that i'm still a child because i'm 14 🙁 But when i was about 7 i wanted to be an astronaut. lol

When I was little, I wanted to be a veterinarian or an actress.

Now, I'm in retail management. No, not happy. It pretty much sucks all the life out of me. I owe $40,000 in student loans, had 5 years management experience before this job, and am making less than $12 in my current job. I want to make a difference in lives, and this is not the way to go.

I refuse to give up hope. Despite the age, I don't think I'm done growing up yet (I'm "cookie dough!") My dream now is to become a CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) and/or to have my own animal sanctuaries. I would love to include writing in this dream as well.

You know 'growing up' is a phrase adults use to control kids right? Nobody 'grows up' and everybody is aways cookie dough.

I have worked in a supermarket and I feel that my soul is being sucked away x

You´re not too old. I went to school with a man the same age as my parents which meant he was 50 then he started. I wish you the best of luck!

One must walk through hell to fully appreciate heaven. Time in retail is time well spent. One day it will all be behind you and you'll be doing what you want to. I know the retail monster as well. I advise Aim for its groin and it will fold easily.
i always wanted to be a vet or a writer when i was little. i'm a student right now, but i think i want to grow up to be willow later 😉

Let me know then you´re grown up so I can ask you to marry me. ;)
First of all, goonies are awesome.

9/10 years old I couldn't pick between professional athlete and football, so I wanted to do both. Football was my passion, but short distance running was my talent. I was this small, kinda chubby/stocky, kinda developing out of that chubby stage. You couldn't for the briefest second look at me and think 'this kid can run fast'. But I could. Which is useful when you played as a winger. I didn't need to use any fancy tricks to get passed people at football, I would just kick the ball and zoom passed.

About 10 years old, however, is when I was heavily into reading. Between 6 and 10 books a week, up until I was about 14.

Which meant I played less football, I just generally spent less time being active. It didn't help that I damaged my ankle when I was 12, it took about a year to heal, in which time I couldn't run full tilt and kicking a ball was a bitch.

In high school I occasionally fantasized about running or football, but I had already switched gears. In high school I decided I would be the greatest writer...(normally I wouldn't share this trash, but I'm on the drunk side of the fence) I didn't want to just write as a pathway to fame. I wanted to create novels that would affect how people view life(or whatever).

Dreams are dumb. When all is said and done, you gotta wake up.(and if you wake up without a hangover, go team you)

Teacher! . . . Oh, wait.

Okay, more specifically, tenured professor of British literature. And a writer. I don't think I'm quite motivated enough to ONLY write for a living (not yet, anyway), but I definitely want to get a novel or so published.

You can write MY Biography! It's gonna be GOOD!
When I was little I always wanted to be a Vet. And I was obsessed with watching all those Animal Rescue type programs. 😀

And now, I've gone in a totally different direction- I'm an actress. Although I once did a play where I played a vet so maybe that counts? Haha. I have to say I definitely prefer this career path- there's a lot less dealing with insides and the not-so-cute members of the animal kingdom. When I was little I don't think I realized the practical gross side of being vet. And the needing to be good at science...which I most decidedly am not. So yeah, while I'm not living the dream I had as a child, I would have to say I'm very happy with my totally different career path. 😉

Lucky! Just kidding and not...Acting takes serious work! Cool, i can say i know an actress!
Wanted to thank you guys SO much for the supportive karma. Wasn't trying to turn the thread into a bummer.

That's the good thing that you can always turn it around.

Besides, I have actually been in a much better mood this last week since I found BuffyBoards. So thanks again!! <3 <3

WE LOVE YOU! We want everyone to be blissfully happy all the time. (then they have more time to post on the boards without that pesky worrying about stuff.) :)
When I was a kid, all I wanted to do was be a paleontologist. Then I got a little older, became a sci-fi nerd and just wanted to be an astronaut.

Out of school I did a course in Audio Engineering and then go my Masters in Audio Design.
Decided that as much as I loved it, I sucked at it so was never going to get employed.

Took a year off studying and worked with my boyfriends mum at a before/after school care and vacation care center and absolutely loved it. So I'm back at Uni this year doing Primary Education and still working part-time.
Eventually I want to do a Masters of Education and specialise in special needs and work with learning disability children.

I've just got to get there ... :/

Karma for a budding teacher!
When I was little my heroes were cowboys like Roy Rogers and John Wayne, so, naturally, i wanted to be a cowboy. Later, in high school and college, I wanted to be a writer. So, naturally, I wound up being an electrician.

My dad wanted to be the lone ranger hehe
Is it weird if I say that, when I was younger, I wanted to be a Slayer? lol, I was 12 when the show first aired here, I was allowed to dream.

Other than that, I was always a really creative child. Always drawing or making up stories for my friends and family to act out...yes, I am Jo from 'Little Women'. (Which is actually my favorite book)

I think I've always wanted to do something really creative like that. I'm a qualified artist and photographer, I've taken creative writing courses, and I'm just about to start a web design course. I think I've achieved my childhood ambition! lol

many reps for keeping the dream alive!
I always wanted to be a teacher when I was little... played school all the time. Then in high school, I went through this rebellious phase and wanted to be a writer/forensic pathologist. 🙂

But, hey, I guess I ended up a teacher. Which is great, because my writing sucks, and now I"m kinda squeamish about the sight of blood and guts. I thought I would always do 2nd grade, actually got hired for 1st grade, and did that for two years. I said I"d never leave 1st grade, and hey, now I'm in 2nd, and it's absolute heaven! They can tie their own shoes!

That's how I feel about my non-remedial class! "Oh, my God, these kids know how to write! I love them!"
I ALWAYS wanted to be an archeologist for years and years, i used to always love dinosaurs as a kid, and i just wish i kept that dream.
Now though, id love to work as a scientist, studying either animals, nature or space.
What i actually did is train to be a chef and i worked in kitchens for 5 years, but its a terrible career and i decided i dont want to do that anymore.

When I was like really little, I wanted to do one of the "glamorous" professions, like singer, actress, director, ...

These days I'd like to become a lawyer or something that has to do with pc's. Though I'm almost sure that the first thing might be bit too high. And also I'd like to do my profession abroad, dunno why...

But most important of all, I'd like to be a mum later, if I see those little babies, those innocent little creatures, really... But guess that needs to wait a bit yet 😀. And I also get weird looks of friends when I say it, so let's erase that idea for a while yet 😀.

Don't give up on being a Lawyer, I'm sure you can make it if you really want it!
I want to be a movie/TV show director & screenwriter.Its my dream 🙂
I love making videos and writing stories/scripts and I think its the job for me!

One more year closer to your dreams - Happy Birthday!
I always wanted to be an archeologist, studied ancient history at school and everything, but then ancient history was not as exciting as i'd always believed so I ended up becoming a teacher and now a Librarian.

I never really had a clue when I was young at what I wanted to be. None at all. I enjoyed reading, but I never wanted to write; I enjoyed drawing, but I could never be an artist; I thought about teaching English, but I don't have the patience of a saint. It was only after watching Ally McBeal that I realised I wanted to go into Law. Don't get me wrong, I always understood that nose whistling and dancing in the toilets isn't actually a part of being a Lawyer, but it got me thinking about it.

Plus, I wanna be rich! The love of money may be the root of all evil, but I want nice things dammit! :silly:
