Spuffies--Do You Like Angel?

Obviously you support the other relationship, but without the Buffy issue entering into the assessment, do you actually like or dislike Angel as a character? Feel free to either elaborate or not, your choice.

Personally, I do like Angel, if for no other reason, he's so serious and stoic that he makes the perfect target for humor. But I also admire his resolve to do the right thing, to try to atone in some small way for the evil that he has done, even though he knows that he can never fully succeed.

Also, hr rescued a little puppy once. My favorite Angel scene in the whole series was when Angelus had to witness that again with Faith watching.

I totally dig Angel. The only times I don't like him are when he's with Buffy. They both annoy the crap out of me when they're together. Individually, I like Angel a lot. And I love Angelus too.

As a fan of both ships i answered in the other thread so i may aswell do the same in here. I'am a massive fan of Angel too. In season 1 i didn't really like him too much probably because we didn't get to see his personality. As the seasons go on we begin to understand Angel's traits as he comes out of his shell.

As a fan of Bangel i liked Angel when he was with Buffy. I liked the relationship but even i have to admit that the character got better when he left to front his own show.

After leaving Sunnydale he had a wit which was great to watch and it was no longer just the brooding Angel we'd got used to seeing. He started to make me laugh just as Spike did and his skills as a fighter got a lot better after he left Buffy.

He seems to find more strength aswell as he fights back against Buffy in Sanctuary and is no longer driven by just doing the right thing. He fires Wesley, Cordelia and Gunn whilst lets many members of Wolfran and Hart die. This was a new dimension we hadn't seen before in regard to Angel. It made him more interesting, more unpredictable.

In summary i really like Angel in both shows.

When he's on BtVS - no. When he's on AtS, I like him fine.

On Buffy, he was boring, two-dimensional and just had no personality. Except when he's Angelus, then he gets far more interesting.

On AtS, he obviously had more screentime and I found he interacted better with the AtS team than with Buffy and the Scoobies.

I agree especially with your last point. Although maybe that was because in Buffy he didn't really have any interaction with Willow, Xander or Giles. On ATS he was in regular contact with Cordelia, Wes and Gunn consequently he built a meaningful relationship with all of them characters. In Buffy he didn't get the chance to do that because he wasn't in the same environment as he was in ATS.

I love Angel. 🙂 He's not high on my favorites, but I still find him to be incredibly lovable and funny. All the time. I just feel that his character was more limited when he was with Buffy.

I'm not a Spuffy per se, but definitely closer to Spuffy than Bangel, so I decided to respond to this...

I love Angel. A lot more than Spike. Imo he's just always had the upper hand in every single issue. Hotness, history, character traits, you name it. I do also like Spike, but for me there's just no comparison.


I guess being a Cangel and all my reply was kinda predictable, huh? You should have a 3rd thread: "Cangels - do you like Spike (or Buffy 😛)" 😉

I love Angel. But I must concur with others; I love him on his own show and only mildly like him on Buffy. He's just so much more interesting and developed on his own show and always seems to regress as a character the moment he steps foot in Sunnydale.

I used to love Angel. He was my third favoriite Buffyverse character - ever. Now, my feelings for him have been called into question, obviously, due to his recent behavior. Do I think his character is savageable? Yes, I want too think so.

I never liked him on BtVS as Buffy's boyfriend, but once he got his own show and was developed more, I adored him.

Angel is - well, was - funny, smart, brave, and selfless.

But I also admire his resolve to do the right thing, to try to atone in some small way for the evil that he has done, even though he knows that can never fully succeed.

Agreed. I also love how Angel never backs down from a fight, no matter what he's up against and no matter how bad the odds are.

Totally! That was a great scene. 'Orpheous' is an excellent episode.

And in agreement with Oriana - I felt Angel's potential as a character was really limited and thwarted when he was around Buffy. I felt like together they didn't compliment each other as I feel people in love should - rather that they made each other worse and less attractive people. As individuals, both Buffy and Angel are extrodinary. Together? Not so much.

Undoubtedly, Angel was limited as long as he was in Sunnydale. Even though he did develop somewhat in the three seasons that he was there, he was never anything but, at best, Buffy's sidekick, and arguably not even the number two character on the show. He had to leave to become a hero that he wanted to be and be able to help the helpless. Though his heroics were on a somewhat lesser scale than Buffy's were (saving the people in a homeless shelter from a pack of vampires hardly compares with averting the latest version of an apocalypse) it wasn't because he wasn't capable of handling something like that as much as it was the fact that the smaller crises tended to get overlooked when facing a Big Bad capable of destroying mankind. Those smaller, more personal, day to day problems gave him a chance to actually see and be with the people that he helped, just as he saw and was with the ones who Angelus had tortured, humiliated, and killed.

Angel was the hero and Buffy was the champion. Both jobs equally important, both necessary. Angel's mission might even be seen as more important than Buffy's, if you consider the fact that she and her friends faced what amounted to a single Big Bad a season, whereas Angel faced a Medium Bad (?) almost every single episode.

I wouldn't say I'm a spuffy or a bangle, but I did like the characters of Spike and Angel.
I was able to pick up on heeps of material to use in fan fics.

I'm not really a Spuffy or a Bangel (I'm a big fan of Buffy/no one, though), but I'm not a big fan of Angel. I only really started liking him in the later seasons of his own show, since I think the writers stopped being so afraid of branching out his personality and started poking fun at him once in a while. In Buffy and the early seasons of Angel, he was a total Gary Stu and the writers constantly felt the need to go out of their way to make him look cool or heroic, probably because they were insecure about his lack of a personality. Plus I'm really not a fan of David Boreanaz (I can't really explain why, but I always feel like he gives of MAJOR douche vibes).

I'm not sure where I fit in because I'm not a Spuffy or a Bangel but I did prefer Angel post Bangel and that's when he elevated to the status of being my favourite character. All this said, I kind of liked Angel throughout the (televised) Seasons.

I totally agree. Angel was boring in Buffy. All he did was mope. In my opinion, Angelus is a million times cooler than Angel.

On his own show, I don't mind him. I actually like him because he develops a personality.

I agree with this. Personally, I don't think they were a very good couple. I just didn't see or feel much between them. Probably because Angel was so flat and 2-dimensional or whatever. Only as Angelus was he fun and interesting to watch.

He's awesome on his own show, though.

He IS a douche in real life (Am I allowed to say that? Is it offensive? If so, it's not intended to be). He cheated on his wife. Anyway, I don't pay that much attention to actors' real lives. I prefer to think only of Booth and Angel.

I loove Angel but on his own show. I agree he was so boring as a character on Buffy and I hate his relationship with Buffy. I am Spuffy but first and foremost Cangel. And I agree Cangel does tend to get left out like people have to be bangel or Spuffy. Cangel isnt really thought of first.

I used to love Angel. He was my third favorite character for many, many reasons. He was funny, brave, kind, heroic, special and at the same time incredibly flawed and easy to relate to in many ways.

Then Season 8 happened.

I can't stand him now. The Angel we are seeing now is nothing like the one I knew and loved. He is dead to me.

If youre reffering to Angel s8/Twilight I dont even count that lol I hate HATE the s8 comics They should have left angel out its stupid I hate when they write Angel on Buffy and I guess the same goes for the comics. I'm not going to let the stupid comic writers ruin angel for me.

How can you not "count" Season 8? It's canon, unfortunately.

I wish it were that easy for me. Angel is ruined for me. I was pretty depressed over "losing" him as one of my favorites but, well, life goes on.

I still have Spike.*



*I ignore the IDW comics because they're not canon. Any of his OOC actions in those stories I pretend don't exist.

I cant count them because a I dont want to theyre stupid lol I stopped reading. And B because Joss Whedon said hed trash them if he had the chance to do a movie. So he obviously doesnt care about them that much. So why should I lol. Theyre total crap in my opinion and very poorly written. Its like the writers just skimmed everything post s3 of buffy and wrote the characters the way the wanted ignoring the character development.

I love Angel. I loved him even more when he got his own show. It is nice to see him on his own and with the AI team. You really start to see his personality. I like his character because he isn't perfect he has problems like all of us and has a struggle. At times he went "dark" and I found that to be so normal. Overall the people that surrounded him helped him which is also very much human we all have those people the ones that matter and I loved seeing Angel with them. Overall I am trying to say Angel was great on Buffy but I loved seeing all the layers on Angel. He had a mission lost it got back on track he was like your everyday person in such a different world.
