I thought I'd revive this thread. 😀

I've never had a strong allegiance to one or the other or even properly discussed it, but if I had to choose I'd go with Bangel over Spuffy.
I like Spike and I like Buffy but I don't think they work as a couple. By the time he was introduced as a love interest I thought the show was retreading old ground with another vampire boyfriend. Spike latches on to Buffy's depression for his own gain once he realises she's willing to have sex with him. And in my opinion souled Spike works better as a friend to Buffy, they have mutual support and respect for each other.

I don't find much to like about Spike when he's chasing Buffy, which is a shame because I like his character a lot when he wasn't obsessing over her.

That's not to say I love Bangel, but I found Spuffy to have very little in the way of moments of happiness or light to it.

I've never been strong either way for a long time. During my first watch-through I disliked Bangel and prefered the development of Spuffy.
Nowadays I ship neither but I lean towards liking Bangel- I like both characters involved, I get their connection, but prefer them away from each other. Their story was nice, but its done and it feels over to me.
I find Spuffy boring as all getout and I'm not going to go into my reasoning again. Just never found them at all compelling.

Bangel.

I liked both originally, but as I get older Spuffy gets more and more disturbing to me.
Angel has the saving grace that he leaves. (And he never made a Buffy sex-doll or, as far as we know, stole her underwear. But then... he lurked.)

Still trying to convince everyone we're different I see! ;-)
I like Bangel post-breakup (including I Will Remember You) and I like Spuffy until about Tabula Rasa/Smashed.

Once more into the breach! Bangel was the three M's of bad screenwriting - maudlin, mawkish and melodramatic. Classic teen romance? Absolutely. Has an expiry date? Sooner than a jug of milk. Spuffy comes at a more adult period of Buffy's life and has the advantage that it seems to continue, but looking at what it is, is that really an advantage?

I am not a shipper at heart. If Buffy wants to hook up with Clem, well, that's her business. Yeah, Cluffy, that's the ticket. I don't really have any right or need to form an opinion about how two other people get along.

I think you have a right as an audience member to form an opinion about how anyone gets along.

I don't ship either - but there are things I like about both. Bangel is truly melodramatic teen romance, until the appearance of Angelus. From that arc onward to the first eps when Angel returned, I really do like the relationship. Then it gets repetitive - too much of tragic love that can never be. What I like most of all is watching Angel grow and change under Buffy's influence.

Spuffy is filled with tension, at times funny and at times dark and gritty. In reality, I would hate Spike but as a tv character, he's riveting. I love the chemistry between them - this is not a teen romance - and it has seriously toxic issues. That said - I do like watching Spike grow and change under Buffy's influence - getting unwillingly dragged into maturity.

However, I really agree with TGIQ - time for all of them to move on.

Buffy doesn't want to move on... ;)
Cluffy! You know I always knew there was some passion in the looks they gave each other... 😉

Cluffy would be based on mutual respect. Buffy let him take care of Dawn. Clem initiated the potentials in their first visit to the demon bar. He sounds like a fun-loving non-demanding type of guy who respects Buffy. Dawn would approve and Miss Kitty Fantastico is no longer in the picture, so his living poker chips would not be a problem and he was trying to cut down anyway. Clem has all the darkness his demonic side carries without any corresponding death toll.

The age old question of Bangel or Spuffy. For me is Bangel, mostly for nostalgic reasons. A part of me will always ship them. I just don't think Spike works as a love interest when he had been her enemy for so long. I think from Spike's POV it's cool that Buffy makes him want to get his soul. But then also he's a demon, so his demon wants a soul? Bangel has its bad moments too. Buffy really should have been more concerned about Angel popping up at her window being all stalky. Personally I like to think the end game is Bangel, Spuffy is a place holder. But really I want the end game to be neither, Fuffy all the way! Lol

Yup - demon wanted a soul - right there in living color :D
Spuffy all the way for so many reasons. Angel was good for teenage Buffy but Spike is a grown up slayers love interest. I love their spark and chemistry together. When you' re a slayer and a vampire with a soul you've got to have a wicked good sense of humour to get you through the day. Buffy + Spike = endless good fun.

Spuffy. Here's why: Buffy is a somewhat unbalanced character in that she is 100% hero/light side (forgive the Star Wars metaphor). Spike isn't really good or bad, he gives her the edge she needs. Spike can pull off a leather duster. Spike has never killed any of her friends. Spike is obv her match in the bedroom (and can actually have sex with her unlike Angel). Plus we all know Angel sex is totally vanilla and Spike is kinks. Spike loved her with and without a soul. Spike has alien friends. Spike has good taste in music. Spike doesn't have any kids. Spike didn't take a little thing like a "single moment of happiness" curse to dump Buffy (in a sewer, rude). Spike keeps it real, he has faults and admits to them. Spike was there for Buffy when ALL her friends rejected her. Spike sacrificed himself to save the world and didn't know at the time he'd be resurrected. Spike + Buffy = <34ever

If Buffy is all light then what the hell was her S6 arc about?

Spike has never killed any of her friends.
Neither has Angel.

Angel was able, as a human no less, to out-stamina a slayer. That's pretty much all the confirmation I need about his sexual prowess. Would Spike be able to do the same? How would we even know if the sex between Buffy and Angel would stay vanilla as you call it? Whedon never allowed them to go there, they flirted with it during the Angelus arc but the show was too young to go the darkness route at that point. Besides didn't Buffy and Angel have sex through a mountain, in space and buttom of the ocean? Far from vanilla that.

Spike didn't take a little thing like a "single moment of happiness" curse to dump Buffy (in a sewer, rude).
Of course he wouldn't. Guy is incabable of standing on his own to feet. He always needs Buffy's skirt or Angel's duster to hang on to.

Spike keeps it real, he has faults and admits to them.
Except when he fault people for saying or doing the same things he does and calls them idiots. Or when he shoves responsibility for his deeds on everyone else.
