Beloved tv characters that you hate

One of the reasons I avoided the show when it was on air was definitely Buffy. She was just too...full of quips. It was annoying as hell. 😂
 
Oz- I don't hate him but he never really did much, yet he's loved by the fandom, why? Sure, there's no reasons to hate him, but there's no reason to love him either. Plus he's academically lazy which is annoying. He's not an idiot but he can't be bothered to put the effort in which seems like an insult to Xander who, despite trying his best, still didn't do very well on his exams.

Clara from Doctor Who- I hate her more than Kennedy which says a lot. She killed Doctor Who for me.

Phoebe from Friends- I found her ditzyness annoying in the later seasons.

Robin from HIMYM- This could be because the show was more geared to be from Ted's POV but it seemed to go out of its way to present Robin as the sun shining from her backside.

Rory Gilmore- Again, the show seemed to try and present her as the sun shining out of her backside. I began disliking Rory during the later seasons. I've not seen the revival because apparently she's even worse in that.

Mikey from Recess- He's so irritating.

The Rugrats from Rugrats- It became annoying how often they got the wrong end of the stick.

Totally agree about Clara! I loved the Ponds so much. She just didn't measure up.

Of course I feel the SAME about Clara. When she became Eleven's "sort of" girlfriend, it was sickening. And poor Capaldi was saddled with her. Moffat was basically giving us the finger by keeping her around...I mean honestly, the bitch was like a plague. I have nothing against the Jenny Coleman, she's adorable; but yes, Clara Oswald killed Doctor Who for me as well.

Phoebe from Charmed; only interesting when she was evil.

EVERYBODY from Friends; I just never understood why that show was popular.

Sam from Supernatural; annoying because Jared can't act. But when he didn't have a soul, Sam was HOT. Also when his eyes went black as he killed Lilith. 💀
 
Clara was awesome. A really great character. She should have had her own spinoff. I never knew people didn't like her.

Buffy Summers may have been full of annoying quips at times, but Xander is 100 times worse if you ask me. How many absurdly inappropriate and poorly timed jokes (and unfunny jokes considering context especially) did he average nearly every episode? If Xander alone had been the star of the show, I'd have never tuned in.

Sometimes I think I'm too hard on poor Xander, and in my eyes he is essentially a tragic character as well as the symbolic representation of disempowered masculinity. And I would even go so far as to say I can relate...a little bit. I empathize but don't sympathize sometimes. And I think he's often a fun character sometimes anyway too. I wouldn't remove him. But if we are talking about annoying characters, I think Xander's worse than Buffy.

I had the exact opposite experience. I understand what @Puppet and @Amber Bunny Slippers are talking about. Some of Buffy's quips felt too cringe-y to me on first viewing, on the other hand, I found Xander's sarcastic humor funny, especially in the early seasons. Not so much in the later seasons as his humor grew to be more goofy than witty.

If Xander was not on the show, I don't think I'd be here. He was the reason I wanted to watch the show. On first viewing, I really disliked Buffy. I thought she was so self-absorbed. I hated how everything on the show had to be about her, like in Xander and Anya's engagement party, she was moping because she didn't have someone in her life or on their wedding day when she was more upset because they weren't the light at the end of her tunnel.

I love Buffy now, though. She's my third favorite character. But back then I couldn't bring myself to care about her. I do feel part of that had to be because of the hundreds of Buffy-bashing Slash fics I was reading.
 
Fox Mulder: Generally I found him annoying when it came to arguing any of his conspiracy theory crap (although he does accurately despite how blinkered and moronic their theories tend to be). From the beginning he made no effort to even sound remotely reasonable or rational so, to me, it became entirely understandable why he was he had become the department joke whom nobody would ever take seriously. On top of that I never really believed/felt that he was a qualified FBI agent.

On the whole Millennium- another Chris Carter TV show- had a much more interesting protagonist who was tons smarter and better at working with others.

Lynda Carter as "Wonder Woman." I always hated her in that role, and just about everything else that I've ever seen her in. No real reason that I can remember, but there was just something about her that I didn't like.
 
I think that maybe I didn't mention this in my earlier post because I was unsure whether this was a loved character or not, but now I'm thinking **** it and I'm throwing her in the ring.

Prue Halliwell. I can't stand her. It's not all her fault (and none of it is Shannen, I enjoy her as an actress quite a lot) some of it is in the writing. As the first 3 seasons progressed, it stopped being the Charmed show and started becoming the Prudence show and that irritates the hell out of me! Even when storylines weren't about her, they somehow ended up either revolving around her anyway or she was the sole savior of the day. I thought it was supposed to be the Power of Three? Their sisterhood was much more balanced with Paige, whether you liked the character or not, you can't deny that!

I knew it would happen and we're not really supposed to defend the characters in here but some of the reasons listed I don't even understand. She's the title character, of course most storylines revolve around her. And ALL the characters quip a lot, there are literally books devoted to the BtVS way of speaking. Buffy didn't mope in Hells Bells, she was still in the midst of severe depression, even then she didn't complain when Xander's dad threw up in her purse & propositioned her, she wore a hideous bridesmaid dress, let Anya get ready at her house, was polite when Spike brought a date with the sole excuse of tongue kissing her in front of Buffy only 1 week after she stopped sleeping with him, helped Xander fit into his cummerbund, and stalled the guests when Xander took off. All she got to experience of romance was personally being left (Angel, Scott, Parker, Riley) and those around her being left by men (Hank, Oz), of course seeing Xander in a committed long term relationship with Anya would be the light at the end of the tunnel that proved a romance could lead to happily ever after. It's not like Buffy yelled at or got mad at Xander & Anya for shattering her hope.

I disliked some aspects of Buffy's personality when I was younger myself now that I think about. Its a immature view, because I didn't quite understand the "why me" moping and the self rightousness "Oh jeez I guess its up to me to protect the school..again" I thought it was a put on, who wouldn't want to be you Buffy? your a literal superhero with a world that literally revolves around you. I grew up see with a more mature view that yeah Buffy's life actually did suck. But she was a teenage girl, remember when you were little how you thought teenagers were the coolest thing in the world. Haha

My pick is House from House M.D. I could enjoy the show taking it on its premise but I had never come in contact from this type of personality before then., I think "House" is a certain very male trope on steroids and is a monster. if I view him the way the show invites us to, as, sure he is a insensitive jerk but somebody has to tell like it is, his maverick genius redeems him and he is sorta cute right, he might be a monster but he is our monster! like..noo he is just horrible.

Having said that I probably shouldn't like Sherlock as much as I do but Sherlock is characterized as differently able, and shows emotions in a strange way, he never intends to wound others. House fully knows when he is being a *** and doesn't care, thats reprehensible, there is no "get of jail free card" for being a good person that others about others.

Emma Swan from Once Upon a Time

A victim of a ship ruining a character. Season 1 and 2 Emma was great but around Season 3 when CaptainSwan became a thing, she took a severe nosedive. I strongly disliked the Captain Hook character for the majority of the series, there was an episode in Season 2 where you could see why people might ship him and Emma together but overall he was a massive jerk, particularly to Belle who was an innocent victim in his vendetta against Rumplestiltskin.

However, come Season 6, Hook could do so much better than Emma. I actually began to like Hook in Season 6, he genuinely apologised to Belle for the things he did to her to get back at Rumple, he offered her a place to stay when she needed it, etc. Emma just couldn't give a crap. Literally a conversation went a little like this:

Belle: I need to talk to Granny about renting a room because I have nowhere else to stay.

Emma: Oh you don't want to sleep at Granny's, it's awful. (Walks off)

Hook: You can stay on the Jolly Roger if you want.


Despite the fact we've seen several characters stay at Granny's without complaints, Emma disparages the one place that Belle thought of that would give her a roof over her head without offering any sort of alternative. It took Hook, the guy that shot Belle over the town lines so she would lose her memories, to step up and offer her alternative accommodation. All this despite Emma being the "saviour".

Even worse is that Hook was planning to propose to Emma but discovered that he had killed Emma's grandfather in his evil pirate days so he rightfully decided to postpone proposing until he had chance to tell Emma the truth of what he'd done in his past. However, whilst he was out, Emma had gone rooting through his stuff and found the engagement ring (which he'd hidden) and the moment he returned home practically forced him to propose on the spot.

If you've ever watched OUAT, you would know what I mean.
 
I hate Wesley W-P. I mean - really seriously dislike everything about him.
Not really a fan of Willow either.

I wasn't a fan of Marissa Cooper from The OC. I loved the idea of the character, a super model looking teen who grew up wealthy but had all the same demons as someone who lost themself in the inner city; kept vodka in her purse, often smelled of alcohol, often got blackout drunk, was going to drink & drive, ODed in an alleyway in Tijuana, snorted drugs, had sex on a dirty mattress on the floor, shot someone in defense, etc. But while I find Amelia Shepherd from Greys Anatomy endearing, Marissa I just wanted to stop sucking the life out of everyone. Maybe it's because while none of the characters ignored she was a huge mess, the show acted like it wasn't serious, that she was still the perfect girl next door with a bright future. Amelia acknowledged her addictions and those around her acknowledged she had an addict or borderline personality even when sober. Julie (Marissa's mom) was right in s1 that she needed to be in inpatient therapy but that was seen as extreme.
 
  • Spike is top of my list, while I don't outright hate him, his overexposure makes me very apathetic towards his character.
  • Chloe Sullivan from Smallville, I never understood why the Smallville fandom loved her so much, she was vindictive, spiteful and a gender-reversed Nice Guy who believed she owned Clark.
  • Felicity Smoak from Arrow, she's a Creator's Pet who gets overexposed in the show and is shilled by practically every character who meets her.
  • Robin Scherbatski from HIMYM, one of those characters who everyone fawns over and is constantly praised and seen as amazing.
  • Regina Milla from OUAT. I found her "redemption" laughable, the show played fast and loose with her morality and I hated how the series' often tried to get the audience to feel sorry for her on the heels of her doing something evil.
  • While I don't hate Buffy Summers, I have never been able to connect with her character and there are so many times I find myself so annoyed with her.

I loved Spike in Buffy Season 2, his appearances in Lovers Walk and The Ring are priceless and amongst my favourite episodes, some of his stuff in Season 5 but from there I totally agree with you.
