I have to write about my cultural groups in my cultural anthropology class, and since the boards count as a culture within my class I thought I might find a way to connect them to this assignment... so, I am going to ask a few questions about the general structure of the boards, if anyone is able to give insight I would be greatly appreciative!
What systems are in place for settling conflict on the boards? I have done some deep-diving into the rules, but I am not sure on the specifics of how issues are settled.
I also was wondering how rules are regulated, specifically ones targeted on language and literacy?

Just some simple questions!
this is the actual assignment question:

• Choose any one of your cultural groups. When someone in that group breaks rules, violates social norms, or otherwise behaves improperly within the context of that culture, how are they “punished”? What does that tell you about the group’s values?

I think I am pretty solid one the group values bit I just don't have a lot of clarity with how the rules are enforced and used.

Look at any cultural structure in the world. Play by the rules or play somewhere else.

Its the same in workplaces, schools, religions, any society. Play by the rules or be outcast. And when there are enough outcasts, they make their own rules and anyone who doesn't play by them, is also outcast, on and on and on. Its the same everywhere in any social group online or off.

No. You would be better off finding one of the more tightly knit majors on your campus, something like art, science or dance. Something where only one or two classes of majors exist, and they have to share specialized resources, like a lab. Ask a professor for a reference.

Probably one of the mods can give the fullest answer, but I'll just say that in my time here (about two years), heated arguments have become rarer, and when they do start, a mod will gently remind people to keep it civil. At worst, a person can be banned temporarily or permanently, but I think that almost never happens. I like some of the above suggestions, though!😉

Similarly, the times people have used foreign languages, they are reminded to stick to English. There are threads for foreign-language use, but they don't get many posts.

I am doing my homework for myself, I am just unsure of specifically how conflicts are dealt with on the boards, and I would need that information to properly analyze said conflict.
It is true though that, often it is "play by the rules or be outcast"
I just mean to ask how, specifically, one would be outcast in this setting and what the level of severity would be depending on the "crime".

Thank you for your insights! I assumed it would be something like this, though I wouldn't know since I haven't been directly involved within a conflict or dispute on the boards.

Usually, the board staff does not have to take corrective action. The users here foster a culture of acceptance and understanding. Every now and again it gets out of hand and a moderator has to say something, but a lot of people are good at self-moderating their attitudes and statements.

The board code of conduct is in our rules/help section, alongside what happens if you break a rule. I would recommend consulting that as a baseline. I don’t feel comfortable discussing moderator actions here, so you may want to PM Buffy. She is the lead authority here.

Being a member of Black Thorn is a big help to being an outcast - except to us who know we is best that is.
Except as Plasma referred to her as the lead authority, I refer to our glorious leader as The Boss - Buffy Summers that is.
So you want to know what happens when someone breaks the rules or violates the social norms or otherwise behaves improperly within the context of that culture.
Like I said as a member of Black Thorn that is pretty much a given at some point or other.
To those of Sineya they will need to be slightly bad just to be noticed, but then, who cares huh?
People are usually punished depending on what they have done.
Arguing, insulting others on the board or being an annoying being is not permitted (usually). Also very bad behaviour in public is often not permitted.
And what does that tell you about the groups values?
As of a few days ago we were all nice people.

Also, that some of us are also considered better than others aren't we (whose gonna say yes?)

I’ve seen plenty of people get banned on here. It’s not fun. The boards have grown into a community that, as @Plasma said, is primarily self-regulated. Even when there are disagreements, it generally stays within topic-related arguments. It has been many years since I’ve seen personal attacks. And when there have been, a moderator usually steps in.
