Cost of Living #8

My dad needs two types of eyedrops after cataract surgery. The co-pay for one is $3.29, the other is $47. We were a little dismayed to find we needed a second bottle of each. We thought the $47 one would do for both eyes, but they warned of cross-contamination. I'm very careful not to touch the tip to his eyelashes when I put it in, so I don't know how contamination would happen, but whatever, I want to follow the rules!

Medical price gouging is rampant. To avoid cross contamination, let out the drop from a greater height so you don't have an eyelash problem.

My phone contract is up, so got to sort that out next week. I'll look at keeping the phone and doing another sim only deal. Hopefully there's something for roughly the same price or cheaper.

I get lots of data and calls for only £10 a month and I'm always shocked to see how much data I have left because it's always a lot!

Tomatoes are really expensive at the moment. My neighbours asked me to put it on the coles order cos he wasnt going to pay $18 a kilo from IGA, but coles were sold out of the cheap ones and hes going to have to pay $12.90 a kilo :/ I have an old greenhouse in the shed I think I will see if he wants it to grow tomatoes in because Im probably never going to use it.

We're just about to have another cost of living surge. Electricity is going to go up by 50%.. No more credits have been announced, but we'll see what happens. Cos when the employed cant afford it, then the unemployed definitely cant. Minimum wage has gone up though...
My groceries are costing about $150 a week now including dog/bunny food, toiletries, cleaning supplies, suncream and everything. Fresh food is costing far more than packaged because there are less specials on the fresh stuff now. Coles are doing a promo thing and I have free pringles and free choc chip biscuits with my next order. I'd rather free tomatoes...

The housing crisis is getting worse. But someone is just about to start building in my town! There are a number of empty blocks, loads of infill to be done. I am so lucky to be in a safe home here. 8 years now - the longest I have lived anywhere in my life!
"In order to find affordable rental housing, [low income households] will need to travel progressively further and further away from the centre of Perth, and that's one of the things that's really pushing inequality in the state," he said.

Gas is creeping up here in Tulsa - it’s now at $3/gallon, which is really high for this area. People are really pissed!

Speaking of dog food I had to switch mine to Dog Chow because the cost of the food she used to eat has literally doubled. Now way I can justify that. I get it at the Dollar Store, and there’s often a coupon too.

I go back to work on July 1, thank god. I also just got my new benefits insurance cards in the mail. I’m so excited! No co pay for in network doctors and no cost for prescriptions! I’m so grateful. And I found out I can get low cost pet insurance for my dog, which will be great! Last time I looked into it, I was getting quoted like $100 a month, which is insane. But with my employer benefits it’s only $25 a month.

Right! Why are freebies food I never want! I don’t have a sweet tooth at all so I wouldn’t even want that stuff. I’d just give it to a homeless person.

Clarification required, when you say Gas do you mean petrol or do you actually mean gas?
I'm going to cut back on some things. I had been getting a brand name washing liquid because it really worked well, because I get really dirty. But over winter I get far less dirty, so I am going to switch back to the home brand type. I have a few bottles of the good stuff stored up incase I need to use it anyway.

None of my diet changes have seemed to help the pain in my legs for long. It feels relief at first but then it doesn't last. So I am going to get back on the bread. Bread is just SO much cheaper to have in the meal rotation and so much easier than having to make something. I have also been eating two minute noodles this week. I unfortunately ate half a block of chocolate yesterday, but then got my period today and felt far less bad about it haha.

I have enough bunny hay stored for the rest of winter now. Should have enough bunny biscuits. I do need to go restock the dog biscuits, but I have 4 dog rolls in the fridge which was a bit too much and I hope we get through it all before it goes out of date!

My car insurance is going up by a LOT so I have to really be careful now with how much electric I am using at home. And try to cut back as much as possible on the groceries and activities. I did have a bit of a wild summer buying all those craft things and new pillows. I need to come back to living within my means again and keep it simple.

@November

It's funny you should mention eating half a block of chocolate. The first thing they feed starving people is chocolate because it stops vitamins from leaving the body. Maybe your leg pain is malnutrition. The 2-minute noodles have a huge amount of salt in them and this may cause inflammation that in turn causes pain. If you are eating mainly local foods, you should be aware that parts of Australia are a trace element desert. One Australian sheep rancher had sheep that were scrawny and about half the weight they should have been. He had the soil analysed and found it to be low in cobalt. A crop duster sprayed a kilogram per acre of cobalt chloride and his sheep recovered from vitamin B12 deficiency rapidly.

I am taking B12 supplements which I rekon helped the feeling in my feet.
We just got a new store near where I live that's focused on less food waste so they sell food and drinks and other things that stores can't sell because of their sell-by-date and then they lower the prices like crazy. I was genuinely shocked how little money it came to when I went there today and I was expecting it to be cheaper than anywhere else. Now I'm crossing fingers that when I get an apartment it won't be too far from the store.

Nightshade has access to one that gives away the food!

Sometimes name brand really does work better! I swear by Cascade dishwasher pods. They are more expensive, but they get the dishes SO clean. When I use the generic, I have to run the dishes twice, which uses more water and electricity.

For what it's worth though I have found that many generic brands work just as well as the name brands.

Yeah exactly, sometimes it is just worth the cost for the product that works
Haha, I just read an article today about the wealthiest postcodes in the state. My postcode is the poorest. I was surprised by that, I thought up north would be far poorer, but the mining money is up there and we mainly have aged and disabled pensioners where I am. The few family farms that are left would not be anywhere near the money the mines make. The other local activities would not be recorded by the tax office...

Topping WA’s charts were leafy-green Cottesloe and Peppermint Grove, where residents enjoyed an average income of $213,621 in 2022-23, tax office data released Friday showed.

The luxury locale slipped from the country’s second-richest postcode to ninth place after earnings dropped 28 per cent.
Yet average income was almost five times the farming region in the Great Southern, which ranked as the poorest postcode.
I knew Perth and the state had quite massive upgrades and urban sprawl since covid, but I guess I didnt realise just how far behind we are here. I felt like my quality of life has really improved a lot, so I cant even imagine what people with 5 times the income are doing with the money, outside of paying for more expensive houses and trust funds.

Im not upset by this info, it might actually mean we get some perks. Depends on if the gov wants the town to survive or die. It would make more sense to keep it going with all the aged care work in the region. But the live export ban promised the kill off towns like this, so I guess we'll see. I feel pretty safe as long as my neighbours are alive, they have really been looking out for me since I got so much sicker after summer.

If they can manage to get those trees cut down for me, it saves me a tree lopping bill!

Just discovered that Tesco are doing cheap delivery slots, for £1.50 instead of the usual £3 for a 4 hour slot.

I'm mostly getting it for cat litter, and other heavy or big items as I still have quite a lot in the freezer that I need to work though.

I'm window shopping online at holidays,I can't afford to book anything but I'm still looking.

I still got to find another £800+ to pay off next year's trip.

So my budget was fine with the new car, but now I have to find an extra $300 a month for health insurance. I did not budget for that. The only place I can cut back is on groceries. So I guess its a good thing none of the diet changes worked for me cos now I actually cant afford them anyway haha. Its ok, I had been eating like a king, and I knew that wouldnt last forever. Its just annoying cos 2 grocery orders a week was so convienent! I didnt have to worry or plan or time, knowing I would just have another order soon. Now I will have to do a few more aldi runs and cut back on the coles delivery. I hope they never cancel delivery out here, but at least now I have a car if they do. So things will be ok, I just have to plan more for the groceries.

I read an article today about people losing weight on home cooked food, but I found the opposite was true! I eat way more calories in home cooking because I dont want anything to go to waste and I cant do the maths to add it all up and thats really how I put on so much anyway. Also, I like butter. Now my scales are broken and Im not going to replace them, just due to cost, but I dont want my weight to go up or down anymore either cos these clothes have to last me!

Just ordered a new gas bottle cos that ran out while I was in the shower last night. It has far more fees to it than the old general store, and someone told me that the feed shop might do gas bottles now, but I forgot before I ordered another. If the paperwork is right - these gas bottles are lasting longer than the last ones for the same size. So I have to think about that. I do not like the gas place that I am with, but the bottles last me longer. So it might even out when I know local places dont fill them all the way up. Thats something for another day. I not exactly good at thinking this week.

Got a good haul at zero waste today, potatoes, carrots, bananas, apples, some broth, bread and eggs.

Banana bread will be made, and I'll also make some mashed potatoes. Maybe soup if I have any lentils in the cupboard.

If the weather is good tomorrow there's a free outdoor screening of Wicked down by the river.

I have dried apple rings and I can do some popcorn so it could be a free evening out.
