Did Angel leaving make BTVS a better or worse show?

Might have been a misunderstanding in phrasing reading back. There was little oversight of Joss, not that he had little oversight of the comics.
Gotcha
At the time that was considered the plus. That he wouldn't need to worry about (in his words) cranky Season 7 TV stars or Budgets or networks or anything. He could just draw it and that was that.
So we have Buffy sleep with a student while the comic informs us she's definitely not gay.
Xander and Dawn get into a relationship!!
Angel is Twilight and kills loads of Slayers. Buffy finds out and is fine with girls under her care being killed and has sex in space with him that creates a Universe. Angel is then normal again until hes not then he murders Giles and then placed under Faith care.
Spike shows up with a bug space ship and they rekindle a will they won't they relationship.
Joss then does basically a reset on Slayers and Buffy gets a job in a coffee shop and abandons all the other girls she led up the garden path and it ends with rehash of Not Fade Away "lets go to work" The end.

All of which suggests Joss did need restraining and not simply have yes men and women telling him how awesome he was

Really, reading that recap back gives the impression he needed to cut back on the hallucinogens. 😀

All the usual suspects joined him in it, so Im sure some party favours were handed around. Jane Espenson and Doug Petrie etc suddenly became comic book writers
Jane did Billy the Vampire Slayer though that was S9
I forget what Petrie did and can't be bothered to look it up
Drew Goddard did one with Xander as Draculas manservant again because Drac was feeling lonely and Buffy teams up with him. It was actually kind of funny to be fair

There's nothing to say screenwriters can't write comics, but they are different writing skillsets so jumping straight in is likely not the best idea.
Buffy was as good as it was because joss had limits forced on him that restrained some of his crazier antics. The comics had no such governor and they went down in flames as a result.

I think he ended up believing his own press about how he was god.

Now to be fair the first couple of issues weren't bad. I mean they weren't amazing or anything and the panel art was terrible but the overall stories you could read then forget again but then it kept going on and on and the stories got crazier and crazier and just fell off a cliff
