Discussion of 4.17 "Superstar" - Aired 4/04/00 (WB-US)

I just don't really like it. It's okay and I really do love Jonathan but there is just something about it that makes me skeptical to watch it again come my Season Four re-watch (which will be soon because I have FINISHED EVERY EPISODE OF BUFFY NOW). It can't compare to the standout episodes of the season and is considered by me as a filler. But when I think about it I think that it's not as bad as I think and so I will watch it again to see how it is.

I actually really like this episode, I remember being totally confused by it the first time I saw it - which I think is a great experience when following a show, you don't what's going on. I thought that was awesome how they laid out this episode like that.

Best line:
Riley Finn: Did anyone else feel way too tall? I felt *way* too tall.

Probably the only time I will ever choose a Riley line as the best, but it was so good 😀

i really like the character of jonathan, and i thought it was great to have an episode centred around him. i thought the storyline was really good, and the acting (esp anya and xander's infatuation with him) was spot on. a good, not too dark episode.
 
I really liked this one.

I loved that Xander and Anya were so into him.

And for some reason I love when Spike tells Buffy that he'd like to see her face the darkness alone for once. Cracks me up.

And it kinda shows how he's attracted to her power, even when she's not even aware that she has it. Always thought that was interesting.
 
I liked the episode because i was totaly bewildered and so it was exiting to find out what happened. It remembered me to the James Bond Films just a little bit more ridicioulous. Of courde it's not the art of episode that i would show friends to hook them for Buffy T.V.S.

This episode doesn't do it for me 😕 It just seems stupid 🙁 Buffy being all dumb and sort of helpless kinda annoys me too 😡 lol 🙄
 
Every time that I watch this episode, I wonder whether it was one of the writers, of Joss himself who was a fan of "Buckaroo Banzai," or perhaps even Buckaroo's direct ancestor, the immortal Doc Savage. I would be curious to someday hear whether or not that's true, or just a coincidence of truly cosmic proportions.
 
It was a very light episode after the events of Who Are You, it did well to make light of Buffy's insecurities concerning Riley and Faith having slept together. I dont think I could have coped with her moping around for 3 more episodes like she did with Parker.

Did anyone else notice that when Buffy lost her slaying prowess she also lost her ability to make witty remarks. Her scene with Spike was pityful.

This episode kind of bored me but I did find myself feeling sorry for Jonathan in the end. And that whole speech Buffy gave to him about having to work hard to get the things you want in life was kind of phooey for me. All the kid wants to do is fit in and nobody ever seemed to give him the time of day. I'd be kind of peeved too... not to the point of brainwashing everyone into worshiping me, but nonetheless ticked off.

But yea, just an okay fluff piece I call this ep.

I've listened to the commentary by Jane Espenson.

Straight from the teaser we can see something is off in the Buffyverse; Xander mentions bunnies and Anya doesnt react and Buffy cant take on a nest of vampires, plus she gets her butt kicked a bit and looks like she cant catch a stake.

This is the only episode were they changed the opening credits and they actually made that collapsable crossbow for Jonathan.

Originally when Jonathan throws the the stake to Buffy she was meant to drop it but that was cut. It focus' on Jonathan taking on the powers of a slayer, for example he sences Spike before he appears.

It was Sarah's idea to have Buffy make Jonathan's tea inside the coffee shop. That scene was meant to be shot with them walking down the street but it rained too much. The scene were Jonathan talks to the army guys Joss wanted the guys to be sitting down to make Jonathan look less small.

The singing voice for Jonathan was done by the actor who played Tucker in The Prom. He's also the singing voice of Aladdin.

The theme of this episode shows what type of person Buffy would have been like if she hadnt had to take charge, if someone had taken the responsibility and what happens when that leader crumbles - Buffy's there to take control.

There's a nice Buffy/Riley moment were he offers her support when no one else does.

The scene with Jonathan were he saves Buffy is meant to let the audience debate whether Jonathan was his normal weak self or if he was still under the spell.

Just curious, but which scene where he saves Buffy? Do you mean where they're standing at the edge of the pit, and they make it look like he's going to push her into it, but instead it pulls her back from it? Or some other time during their fight with the monster?

Or some other battle during the episode?

Its the very last part of the fight were Jonathan tackles the demon and they both end up going into the pit but Buffy grabs Jonathan's ankle and saves him.

Ahhhhh yes, that part! I just rewatched it last night so you'd think I'd remember. 🙂

The jonathon in the real world makes me so sad. Like... He should have friends! He shouldn't be so lonely. And he is so short, hahaha... But really though I wish Jonathon could've ended up in a better place, rather than right back where he started. I don't know I just wish his character could have had a happier ending? The scene a couple seasons ago when he was going to commit suicide was very sad and touching. I just want to see him truly happy!

I can honestly say this episode is my least favorite of the entire series. I can understand, at least to some extent, why someone would enjoy this episode; it's just so disjointed in my opinion and completely separate from the "Buffy" canon.
Every time I get to this episode on my DVD, I watch the first few minutes and then skip forward to the end...I guess I just can't suffer watching it in it's entirety.
I do get a kick out of seeing Willow near the end & her bewilderment in admitting that ..."Buffy...was...right....Buffy was right." lol
 
Aww, I absolutely adored it. Thought it was very cleverly done, but then It does help that I always loved Jonathan's character.
 
This was an ok episode, mostly average, but one thing always stood out to me:

Was anyone else bothered by those sexy twins sleeping with Jonathan due to the spell, or was it just me?
