Xander should have know that things never go right on the hell mouth if magic involved. But he thought that things would be different. Lol .

Never saw this particular episode in original tone since the songs are subbed in the German version. The speech parts are, however, synchronized and sometimes a bit different in context. Did he really say "revelries" in the sense of big orgies? At least that's my dictionary comes up with as a translation. 😀

However, it implies that he knew about the singing and dancing. At this point, he had learned the dangers of magic and summoning, that there are always consequences. He should know better but I can see your point Mr Trick. Well, since I don't like the music I have to rely on the rest, which is the plot and its consistency.

I t has all sorts of dialogue - from episode - to complete character arcs, to everything else I can think of. You can look up one character and get any significant dialogue.

Here's what they have:
GILES: If it was in the shop ... then one of us probably...

ANYA: Xander?!

XANDER: Well, I didn't know what was gonna happen! I just thought there were gonna be dances and songs. (to Anya) I just wanted to make sure we'd... we'd work out. (nervous smile) Get a happy ending.

Given what happened, I'd just say that Xander was way more nervous about marrying Anya than anything else. He didn't need to to anything magic - all he needed to do was pick up the necklace and say something along the line of "Lord of the dance come forth" while he was goofing around, and that is a very Xander thing to do!

Revelries are festive parties with music, dancing and lots of booze. It's a more urban form of a hootenanny. Though that whole orgy thing would have been an interesting episode in lieu of a musical.

Aw, I dunno. They made a breakthrough with putting Willow in a lesbian relationship with Tara and that was major on TV back then- can you imagine the first major big gay wedding on mainstream TV back then? 😛 And with Sweet, it would of been fabulous! 😛

Thanks for the link! I discovered the site some time ago and it's really great how much effort some fans put into stuff. The quote from me was from here. I didn't really look at that time but it was from the shooting script which, I believe, shows how the episode was originally planned. There are quite some differences. For instance, the Xander insulting Willow scene in "The Pack" is much more exaggerated including a scene where Willow is crying. Or in "Conversation with Dead People", it's actually The First in Tara's form speaking to Willow. The talk at the cemetery between Giles and Buffy in "Lies my Parents told me" is longer and Giles refers to his killing of Ben. There are a lot more differences I suppose.

That's one of my favorite sites - I love to compare the originals with the transcripts. I believe that makes us both....fabulous!😀
Sadly it was down when I needed it - but I do like the arc feature on the B-verse one. It's fun to simply follow a character, and see how they relate to another character from the start of the show!

I'm always glad this forum exists. It's very active and that's great.
Those two sites plus this one are mandatory for fanfiction writers I suppose. The latter is perfect to quickly look what a character wore in an particular episode or how the environment, buildings, rooms etc. looked like.

One of my favorite episodes. (Then again I love musicals anyway). The songs are brilliant, and I remember being in awe of Amber's voice the first time I heard it; shy little Tara could really sing! And getting to hear Tony Head sing is always a treat. And Sweet was one of the coolest demons they've had on the show.

I have the soundtrack to this and fully admit to listening to it a lot (and yes, singing along).

Xander summoning Sweet always seemed like a bit of a cop-out to me though, but I love the episode so much I'm willing to forgive that. (That and I've always wondered if he was just covering for Dawn, pretending he was the one who did the actual summoning so Dawn wouldn't have to get married to a demon.)

I still suscribe to the the theory that he was covering for Dawn. Either way I don't think it matters. People make far too much about it. The episode is not about that.

I love musicals so this episode is pretty perfect to me. Everyone's performance is wonderful, considering half the cast aren't singers. The music and lyrics are beautiful and clever, and the episode moves the story along. Making the episode that Buffy admits to being in heaven a musical is clever, as it takes all the melodrama out and just leaves the emotional impact.

Buffy sings about wanting to be alive in the opening number, but her actions show she actually wants the opposite. This is a theme of the season, Buffy doesn't really know what she wants, just like most of the characters. They all say they want something but their actions don't match their words

Xander and Anya can't tell each other about their fears for the future, Dawn is lonely and desperate for attention, Spike begs Buffy to let him rest in peace, but that's actually the last thing he wants, Giles wishes he could 'play the father' but feels he's standing in the way of Buffy taking responsibility for her own life and Tara learns she truly is under Willow's spell.

Buffy sings about wanting the fire back, but for her melting away and saving the day are the same thing, and although she sand about wanting to be alive, she feels nothing about the endless days ending in a blaze. She is genuinely conflicted. She sings about having to work so hard to be a normal girl and to fit in, something she has never really come to terms with, but for me the theme of S6 is Buffy finally gives up on 'normal' and accepts herself as The Slayer.

She finally admits she was in heaven, and all the lies come crashing down. When she's begging Sweet to 'give me something to sing about', you can see the realisation in her face, she wants it all to end, so she begins to dance knowing that there's every chance she will dance herself to death. It's only Spike that saves her, telling her she can only heal by living, and that one of them has to be living.

It ends with my favourite song, Where Do We Go From Here, with everyone sad and mistrustful and adrift from each other. And of course the curtain closes on a kiss when Buffy, more lost than ever, runs to Spike hoping he'll be her anchor to the world.
 
I liked the episode very much. A number of them were good singers.

The only thing I didn't like about it was I didn't hear Willow sing. Makes you wonder why she didn't .

Simple. Because Alyson Hannigan cannot sing at all. When she heard there was gonna be a musical she told Joss she wanted minimal singing, and if you hear her three lines, you understand why.
 
I thought that was the reason. But in the show the reason she wasn't singing could have been because she had a lot of secrets to keep . And she didn't want anyone to know them.
