Discussion of 6.07 "Once More, With Feeling" - Aired 11/6/01 (UPN-US)

I want to like this more than I do. I love parts of it but I'm not a big fan of musicals and some of it really doesn't do anything for me.
I will never complain about listening to ASH sing and AB was very good, particularly in their duet. JM I liked sometimes but not as much in his first song. I really liked NB and EC in their duet and some of SMG's songs.
My favourite line is about the police 'collecting witness arias', I don't know why lol
Also, the lyrics in Standing are bloody heartbreaking as are a lot of the lyrics that Buffy and Tara sing.

The best part for me is that we get to hear what the characters are thinking (particularly the ones who so rarely talk about their feelings). I liked that neither Buffy nor Willow were really listening to the songs sung directly at them. I think that's the point. I liked the acknowledgement of Buffy's depression and an insight in to her state of mind (which is rare indeed), likewise with Giles (who almost never says how he feels and I don't even think he's telling the whole truth here). We also don't usually get much about what Xander is thinking except when he's angry. Buffy, Giles and Xander are the most closed off with respect to their emotions and it's a great way to get to hear them. Interesting that Anya doesn't hear Xander (and vice versa) and nobody is listening to Buffy until the end when they get the harsh truth of what happened to her. It has been repeatedly shown and talked about that Buffy doesn't listen to Giles (at least about this sort of thing) and it is shown explicitly here.

I just don't like all the songs as much as some people so I can never give it a 10

I think this episode is overrated.
Some episodes grow on you over time, the more you watch them. This is, unfortunately, the opposite. I loved it when it first came out, but with every viewing I find more flaws and songs alone isn't enough to save if for me anymore...

I loved this episode when I first watched it and I have seen it about ten times now and the original luster has finally started to get dull. The Xander - Anya bit was cringeworthy after a few viewings but if I want to watch a single episode now, I would choose "I Only Have Eyes for You" or "Something Blue". These are great standalone episodes that age a bit better.

This is the one episode I really hate that I like. I mean, the songs are so darn catchy….I was cringing the whole episode but I was singing the songs for weeks afterwards!!!

I will say I kinda wished Joss had hired a real composer instead of writing the music himself…I think he fancies himself a composer (he was trying to write and score a ballet at one point…like, what?!?) but I really don’t think he has enough of a musical education…clearly he knows enough, but I think the songs would have been enjoyably catchy if he’d found a real composer. Ah, but alas, much to my chagrin, I still find myself singing “Something to Sing About”, “Walk Through the Fire”, and “I’ll Never Tell”.

Thought the one where the woman was trying to get out of a ticket funny 🙂

That was actually showrunner Marti Noxon who played that part. And writer David Fury was the one who sang, "They Got the Mustard Out".
Did anyone have the separate DVD for this episode with the singalong? I got it very young ages ago.

I like when Willow says 'Do I have to fight to keep you because Im not large and butch' and then Tara pulls her and they do that adorable giggle. Warms my heart.
I think Standing (non reprise) is quite underrated I love Anthony's voice and the message behind the song to Buffy.

On the DVD I have for S6 I think it has that as an extra.
When I first watched it I was wondering if I watched the right series xD Ich was NEVER a fan of something like that. But I have to say I like some songs. Special the song of Spike or if all sing together. And the end of it. Some time later someone gifted me the cd version to christmas.

That hair! He looks less like a Ripper type, though, and more sensitive and soulful.
I believe there's a picture of him done up as Dr. Frankenfurter.

That's because he WAS Dr Frankenfurter 😂

He played him on the Stage for many many years...I think (without getting the DVD extras out) Giles, Spike and Tara were the only ones with any real musical experience, Willow was petrified and couldn't hit a note hence her having very few parts ("I think this lines mostly filler" being one of the finest lines in the show) The rest had varying degrees of musical training to get them through the show.

Too bad we didn't get a Joyce song. It could've been amazing. It would start off in the Summers house kitchen with her washing dishes singing about the housework, then about Buffy and Dawn and her time in Band Candy with Mr Giles.

Buffy would harmonise with her and Dawn would be interfering in the song.
