During the first three seasons of BTVS, the school library was where the Scoobies always hung out, concocting schemes and plans, generally socialising and entertaining us.

Moving into season four, notice how much time they spend at Giles' house.

I think its a great place for us to watch the characters. It has a really warm vibe to it and is quite homely.

I was always of the opinion that neither the Magic Box nor Buffy's house during later seasons really worked that well as a good place for the gang to congregate, but, for what they did in season four, Giles' house just worked excellently.

Pluses, minuses, on where the Scoobies spent most of their time throughout the seasons?

Giles' place makes sense for Scooby HQ as Giles can store all of his books there. Buffy, Willow and Xander have to travel anyway because of work (Xander) or just to leave campus (Buffy and Willow). Giles doesn't need to go anywhere because he's unemployed so it makes sense for the scoobies to go to him rather than him travelling unnecessarily.

They should've all gone to Buffy's house for thanksgiving though. Joyce was out of town, but Buffy's home kitchen is bigger than Giles' plus she has a dishwasher.

Yes! But then BUFFY would hav had to clean up!!!!! 🤪
I think it works. My guess is, they wanted to keep Joyce and her home out of Season 4, to enhance the college atmosphere.

Plus at Giles house it meant he had to do the washing up! 😉

I always liked the magic box as a venue

It always annoyed me s1-3 that they met at the Library.... they would constantly get attacked by vampires there.... why not meet at someone’s home where vampires cannot enter?
The Watchers Council wanted the vampire slayer to be a secret identity, so they made the role undercover, just a schoolgirl and her librarian watcher. They didn't know she'd get friends and family involved or that she wouldn't die within the first year, which wouldn't be an issue to them.

Given that Angel would introduce the "Sanctuary" spell to act in the same way as the household blessing warding, I would say the creators understood it to be a plot hole.

As far as speculation goes, I suppose Watcher operational security puts paramount importance on secrecy, Not defense. Safe houses can be compromised, wards can be detected and dispelled, but a Watcher and Slayer is a two man terrorist cell, nothings harder to detect than a lone wolf. I suppose if you have a Priest, blacksmith or Witch as one of the Secret Keepers, that's three. If you think about Wish Buffy, or Kendra or Faith, they are transients, going where they are needed, not a knight in her castle. Stealth in those cases would be more important. You may wish to consider, until recently, the Watcher and the Slayer's cover would have been a Priest and his servant girl. That's a pretty secure setup. The watchers may still be operating with that mindset.

It was only due to Spike's vigilance and Angelus's treachery that the library was compromised. So maybe, it does work. Except when you are dating a vampire. Vampires don't seem to be the type to go hunting for the Slayer, Death is her gift, and she fights with Holy weapons. Individual master vampires may want to go after the Slayer, but my guess is most would avoid her the same way criminals try to avoid cops.

I loved their base being at Giles’ house , it had such a homely feel to it and I loved that they all had thanksgiving there together, making it feel even more of a family base and it just felt so right and it was always funny to see Giles getting drunk in his house or opening the door in his robe or people crashing in without knocking 😂

I liked Giles house too. I agree about it being better than Buffys house to enhance that college atmosphere.

Buttttt...I do prefer the magic box in season 5/6 sorry

I loved Giles' apartment and the Magic Box.

I may be the only one who thinks this but I would have preferred it if Buffy didn't go to college opting for being a slayer without the influence of The Council after declaring that she won't be taking orders from them anymore, she could turn the basement into an at-home training area whilst having an area where she would research vampires and for making weapons.

Buffy would then get a part-time job at the Magic Box to help her mother out with the expenses, where she could receive additional training and supplies from her unofficial watcher, then after work she would patrol, go home, shower, have dinner then go to sleep.

With having Angel be contactable by phone then later having Spike more involved while also having Anya who is a thousand year-old former demon would have been amazing resources for Buffy to utilise.

During Season 4, Buffy was still into trying to have a normal life so I think she would want to keep the slaying stuff separate from her home life so to speak. I think it's a shame they didn't keep Buffy at college and actually show her transitioning into adulthood instead of doing the whole "you've just turned 20 so now your life sucks. Your mom is dead so now you have to play parent to your bratty teen sister. Also you've got debts so enjoy your crappy job. Welcome to adulthood!"

Dawn was the worst thing to happen to Buffy. Think about it, Buffy was quite happy in Buffy vs Dracula, then Dawn appears at the very end of the episode and everything starts going downhill.

Actually that makes a lot of sense. I would have loved to see an organic transition to adulthood. I just would have loved to see her being as independent as she could away from the Council.
The library looked the koolest, but the cast & crew hated filming there! I'd say Gile's apartment was 2nd.

Why'd they hate filming there?

I agree with the OP, Giles' house was nice and cosy, though that's a bit ironic considering its history with Jenny and everything LOL.

Gods, sleeping in that same room and bed...he really was hardcore.
Priceless

I always thought it was weird Buffy kept the sofa Joyce died on.
Guess it was at a real location or built to look the same and it was kind of close quarters. So not the best for filming in.

Why did they hate filming there?! It was a really open space with a lot to work with and a great atmosphere!

can't imagine those hard, straight backed chairs were fun to sit on for hours on end of take after take...
The library is the most nostalgic and Best setting. I understand why they couldn’t stay once high school was over, but it definitely is iconic. Love Giles house, it’s just funny how spike would always be there

I liked Giles' house for the scoobies HQs had a homey feel and was kind of tucked away. Unlike the library, I liked that too but it was a school library and anyone student or council could just walk right in. In Gingerbread, all Giles' books were confiscated. Synder barged in anytime he liked. Soooo.

I wanted Snyder to walk in as Oz was naked in the cage, being watched over by his girlfriend Willow...after he heard reports from scared security guards of howling and growling in there. Mystery "solved." Summoning Willow to his office...
