Ferris Bueller's Day Off - 8/10

Decided to have a punt on a classic I've never seen before. Glad I did as this is really enjoyable and nice escapism. It's very silly but you don't care because it's funny and charming. I don't think it come across too dated outside of the obvious fashion and such like.

@Priceless Ha! Last time I checked 7.5/10 was a good rating?.... I guess it was a bit slow at the beginning, some of the flashbacks were a bit much (like the stuff with Todd). I think the pacing suits a TV series more than a film. But if you like the show I think its satisfying.

Wonder Woman (2017)-7/10:
I liked how Steve Trevor's arrival on the island opened up a brand new world for Dianna, also liked how it didn't feel like it wasn't purposely pushing certain agendas.

I watched three films today, The Mechanic and a poor remake. Carrie the Chloe Moretz and Julianne Moore version and so much better than the original then there was Red.

[Ghost Boy]

Live By Night. 7/10.

This got pretty negative reviews but I thought it was quite good. If you enjoyed other recently-made historical gangster films (Public Enemies, American Gangster etc) then you might like this one too. Production-wise it is very impressive, great costumes and sets as well as some beautiful cinematography. The only real problem is that the emotions of the characters are not conveyed as powerfully as they could have been.

Selah and the Spades (2020) 7/10

Unique alternative teen drama, like a fresh take on Clueless. Impressive style, very trippy with powerful performances. Not perfect, but really worth checking out.

A bit all over the place but with some genuinely unsettling scenes, I was expecting this to be better but it wasn't terrible.

(Re-Watch) The Haunting of Hill House (1999) - 7/10
It's schlocky fun! I'm aware this isn't the greatest movie ever, but the cast list is pretty epic, for its time, the music is brilliantly chosen (particularly Manson's cover of Sweet Dreams) and there is some fun scares and lines. It's one I go back to every five years or so, and it was everything I remembered it being.

Also still holds up. The kid is great, had to look up what he’d done since, sadly he died of a heroin overdose 12 years ago. Child actors too often seem to end up in a tough place

The Conjuring (2013) - 7.5/10
It was a good film. On the one hand, it was painfully predictable and filled to the brim with countless horror tropes, but on the other, there was a good heart beneath all that, great acting and I absolutely loved Lorraine Warren as a character; I can totally see why they built a franchise out of this, even if it wasn't the greatest, most original piece of horror ever. I definitely expected more but perhaps I'll get that from one of the other films, like the Annabelle 'spin-off'.

Annabelle (2014) - 7/10
The Conjuring was just slightly better, for a lot of the same reasons; predictability. It also lacked the best part of the first one; the Warrens. But I enjoyed it and there were some genuinely scary parts, like the basement elevator scene, that got to me a bit.

The Conjuring 2 (2016) - 10/10
Now, this is more like it! Not a single thing was predictable, it constantly played with my expectations and gripped me throughout. The actress playing Janet was the true star of this, one of the great child performances of the decade, followed very closely by Mr. Warren. Where the first film had me loving Lorraine, this one did the same for Ed, who was a total standout. Just an amazing experience, can't wait to see it again!

Labyrinth-5/10
The great david bowie/ jim Henson classic I've been told. Finally saw this movie for the first time. Wow Jennifer Connelly is young here. Lol it was an interesting film. Like a bizarre Alice in Wonderland feel to me and also the princess Bride i kept thinking about. Not done I'd rewatch but i can see why people like it. I'm not a Bowie fan and the relationship with the girl seemed weird but i lived all the muppet creatures. Next up is The Dark Crystal.

Annabelle: Creation (2017) - 5/10
Christ, this was such a chore to get through. For the most part, it was just boring, dragging on, and relying on those idiotic jump scares that the franchise has shied away from in the past. The storyline wasn't nearly interesting enough and the film couldn't figure out which character was the protagonist. It didn't create likable characters the way past films have which meant that you couldn't root for them later because you'd been wishing them dead since the beginning. The ending also went way too far in hammering in the connection to the past Annabelle film and I just felt irritated throughout, waiting for it to end.

However, there were a couple of interesting scenes with genuine scares and the acting wasn't too bad. The way they tied it into the overall universe also worked for me, mostly, so the rating is way better than what it could have been.

The Nun (2018)
I am absolutely not in the mood for this. On top of all the bad reviews I've read, and the spoilers I have, I am right now 20 minutes in and just don't even want to look at the screen. And not for scary reasons. So, I'm going to skip this and move directly on to the next Annabelle film. Maybe someday I'll actually see this all the way through.

Annabelle Comes Home (2019) - 9/10
Phew, so glad to get back to what makes this series so good, another strong outing. Proof that you need the Warrens (even Judy) to make a great Conjuring film 😀

I loved the familiar faces, as well, the actress from the new Jumanji films and an actress from a fan-favorite SPN episode. The focus on a very small amount of characters worked here in a way it didn't in the first Annabelle film and again there were genuine scares again. I also loved that Judy turned out to have inherited her mom's powers, which is something I posed to myself as a possible theory back while watching Conjuring 2.

This is definitely an up and down franchise, but so long as good ones like this keeps coming occasionally, then I'll keep watching.

I had been looking forward to this movie since I heard about it. What a precious wholesome movie. There is nothing better than a bromance between a dumb jock with a heart of gold and a lesbian. There was nothing complicated about the story but it was a charming movie that focused on friendship, and I am here for it.

Deadwood - the Movie (HBO). 10/10 Superb! Such a shame Milch has Alzheimer's. For the first 10 minutes I regretted not re-watching the entire series but as the characters and the original actors rolled in so the years rolled back. A bittersweet ending (I cried - which is almost unheard of for me) but the ending the series deserved.

Yes. It was very moving. It's a shame that some of the actors passed away and couldn't appear, but the movie was much better than I expected. I was not expecting it to be that good, based upon normal hollywood track records with those things, but it really did feel like Deadwood. Glad you finally got around to watching it.

Official Secrets 10/10

A taut and intense political thriller, I found no fault with this film. This is probably Keira Knightley's best role, there is a stellar supporting cast and an intriguing and gripping true story at the centre of the film. Absolutely brilliant.
