Reboot Still Happening

I feel like, for myself, there is no downside to more Buffy. If it's good, great! If it's not, the original show doesn't lose anything. It will still be there.

Yeah trust me speaking as a classic who fan I know full well that a shitty reboot run by elitist fanboy pricks can damage the original's reputation and identity in popular culture.
If it becomes a thing, cool, if it flops, boo, if it doesn't, great.

My only concern would be that modern television is all about six to eight hour long episode mini-series that can be cut into movies as opposed to serial TV.

Whether it's woke (conservative pejorative) or it's woke (actual definition of being socially conscious) great, excellent, give me more.

As for it being "woke" and it being an issue... 🤣 Am I in crazy land? You realize that if the 1997 Buffy the Vampire Slayer was released today, people who are "anti-woke" would shit on the show for carrying a feminist and LBGTQ+ agenda, and would whine every time a female character in the show said/implied men suck? Buffy has always been "woke". I seriously doubt that would change in a reboot/remake.

It's insane to me how the "anti-woke" crowd often defends shows or films from the past that had elements of what they would now qualify as "woke", but when a new project comes out that has similar elements, they're like "This is terrible! Why are they trying to force-feed me all this woke crap!" It's like their "anti-woke" glasses are only functioning when they watch new media. 😵

I think Gunn would be written differently; they'd make it all about the colour of his skin and every storyline that centred around him would involve racism. Or maybe I'm just being cynical. lol.

This is a solid piece of info. Dolly Parton would, obviously, be in a position to know what Sanddollar or it's partners are doing, as opposed to which ever actor is being interviewed this week. (Yes, I'm sure Felecia Day is in constant contact with the producers, and David would just love to stop whatever he is doing to play Old Man Angel)

Having said that, eh? It's not useful. Consider, Kuzui Enterprises tried to produce a remake of Buffy as early as 2009. Do you think that they ever really stopped trying to do so? If Untitled Buffy of Color Successor Series is "still" in production, that's 2018, that's 6 years, just since the announcement. They are producers, they are always trying to make money from their production. They are like the supporting cast from one of those Nickelodeon shows with a minor cast, they are always game for a reunion.

What I would take seriously is a casting announcement, or a Broadcast or Studio partnership, or a financing deal, or a showrunner (Executive Producer who is also head-writer) being contracted, or a production order of some kind. Something that indicates that someone is willing to spend money on this project, and is doing so. Contracts are real, gossip is not.
 
When people in general finally came to their senses and decided that blackface wasn't okay to do anymore, there were newspaper editorials from tons of bitter comedians saying that censorship would be the death of comedy and everyone was just being too sensitive. And this was decades before the rise of notable blue comedians like Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Sam Kinison, etc. The people whining about "wokeness" today are no different, and history will look back upon them the same way.

I understand that sometimes shows or movies do cynically just try to check boxes with diversity and/or preach hamfisted messages with shallow characters; even if we broadly agree with the intent behind the messages, it can get old being preached to especially by someone with a lack of subtlety. But that doesn't mean diversity itself isn't inherently valuable. What you should be asking for is quality writing and honest intentions.

True about Dolly as she did help produce the original show. As long as it is done well, Ala the new Sabrina (even though that show blatantly praises Satan) and not like the new Craft, Cruel Intentions, Charlie’s Angels etc. I could get into it and be glad to get new characters (and potential cameo or guests from the original series) in the Buffyverse. If they start it off like Welcome to the Hellmouth with a new girl playing Buffy I will be soo unhappy. They better know better than to do that to the fans. As Sydney said in Scream 4 “don’t F U * * k with the original”
It’d be cool to see different slayers around world… I obviously want more of a continuation/spin-off than a reboot. I don’t like the word reboot.

It seems like it will be hard to significantly connect it to the original series with so many of the actors unlikely to come back and a lot of the ones who took part in the audio story and are therefore probably likely to come back-like Charisma, Emma and Amber- can't really come back without the story pulling fanfiction moves because their characters are dead. So that might make them lean towards doing a reboot, it's probably easier on their part to do a reboot but it probably wouldn't be good. A revival has a better chance of being good.
 
As for the article saying the new lead will be black- it makes it so obvious that it’s a token character but as I stated in a previous thread, the original did lack melanin so why not make up for it in the revival with the main slayer being black or whatever; I’d like it if she was mixed race so it’s not such an issue but we’ll see. As long as she’s better than Rona! Maybe Indira from the Slayers audio book?

Well they rebooted "Night Court" and it seems to be running strong so who's to say if it will be a hit or not.

Couldn't be any worst than "Wolfpack" being axed only after one season.

Amen to that 💅 especially on the final point you made.

I do agree that the mini-series format is worrying. I think if this ever becomes a thing, it’ll be a Disney+ show, as my understanding is that they hold the rights. Given Disney’s content output in recent years aside from some outliers like Andor….I'm not hopeful. If it gets revived, it’ll be one season and cancelled imho.

They also have the Vampire Diaries to compete with. Love it or hate it, younger generations are gonna be more familiar with that than Buffy. You’re gonna get a lot of comparisons and “why isn’t this as good as that”

Rights: Disney ought to own the Original Series, as majority owner. The WB, as the broadcasting network, may own a share, as may the producers (Kuzui Enterprises, Sanddollar and Mutant Enemy). They should not have the rights to make a new series, and the Producers were clearly free to shop the product around. Disney or the WB may also own the IP from the TV show, in part, or in whole. This is the reason why I think Buffy will never get remade, because buying television rights to a YA Book is much cheaper.

As an aside, if anyone has purchased any recent merchandise, whom is it licensed by? Thank you.

This is a very vague premise. Kind of like the Firefly show Disney was allegedly doing, when all that happened was one person who worked for Disney said it might be an interesting idea.

When they have producers and start announcing cast, then I'll pay more attention.
 
I would prefer a new story, rather than retelling the original one with different actors; the Buffyverse is big enough that this is easy to do. If they do that, bringing back dead characters isn't a problem as it still fits with the 'verse's lore; "Doppelgangland" showed that there are alternate universes and alternates can travel between them. Or they could admit that everything after "The Gift" is an AU and quietly ignore the events (not all fan fiction is bad, but that is an example of bad fan fiction) so that things unfold differently. Perhaps they still have a Buffy, the child of Buffy and Robin Wood still living in an intact Sunnydale.

But, at the moment, this seems more like "We definitely haven't forgotten this idea. Honest!" than something to take as being proof that there will be a reboot.
