The Golden Globes

I don't keep up with this stuff and normally don't make a point to learn about directors and such (notable exceptions aside), but for those who pay a lot more attention to the Hollywood lifestyle, you might know how plausible some of the things I've read and heard (including from a guy with professional experience, won't say his name since he still hopes to get his foot further in the door, though my memory on how much of what I'm about to share came from him is very fuzzy).

Many of the awards apparently includes bribes, favors, and maybe a hint of blackmail. This doesn't have to be the actual director or actress, but can be an agent who does this.

Furthermore, Hollywood is well known for its behind the scenes parties, which while I'm sure many are relatively innocent, could easily produce situations from the past in which women or of color could not rise up high in business or politics under normal circumstances as they were not invited (or even prohibited from) to the clubs where the people at the top essentially made deals with each other over glasses of champagne and games of golf.

Since women were typically not allowed they didn't get a chance to participate in this "behind the scenes" maneuvering which greatly impeded their ability to rise in the ranks which is why such "boys clubs" were (officially) shut down (or technically speaking, they couldn't prohibit other demographics anymore, though I understand some shut down in protest, and I can't help but notice how many Bilderberger meetings, Trilateral Commission meetings, and the such tend to be dominated by white men despite supposedly representing global interests that have expanded beyond Europe and the US, though they make it very difficult to know the actual members plotting market policies and likely politics around the world--I'm not going into the conspiracy theories involving them, mind you, but their secrecy combined with their power certainly should be of concern, and allows them to circumvent many laws as a result).

Perhaps something similar is going on in Hollywood where those who make the nominations and all that are doing so at private parties where it's extremely difficult to get into if you're not a white male. You can't play "office politics" if you're not allowed into the office to socialize beyond work. Furthermore, there's an added incentive to please others who do have such clout, further hampering the nominations of those without it.

This doesn't have to be diabolic, mind you, it could be unconscious, but at least contribute to the end results. Assuming what I read or heard of the bribery and such going on behind the scenes is true it would still be shady if women and non-whites had equal access, but at least it would still be fair in its own way, since presumably those truly eligible would have a budget for bribery and maybe digging up dirt on those whose endorsements they seek just like the white men.

Hmm, perhaps the successful women COULD use their money to hire their own operatives to work as the personal assistants of these other people and expose their shady practices, even if only for revenge...though to do so would pretty much guarantee they'd "never work in this town again."

It's just speculation on my part for those interested. I don't claim to know how it works, though it wouldn't surprise me if my speculations are right.
