Hey y'all! So I'm taking the advice of several people here and watching the series for the first time! If you're a fan of this show, feel free to chime in! Or better yet, watch for the first time with me! I'll be posting my thoughts regularly as I watch.

Please, no spoilers.

Oooh it will be cool to hear from a first time viewer! I didnt know there were any of them left 😛 The first season is a roller-coaster, so I would love to read your thoughts. I found the show a bit predictable on the first watch but came to love the soapieness of it, and now it is one of my comfort food shows.

I haven't seen it either, but I really don't think it's my kind of thing.
Thoughts on pilot:

I love teen shows and I love vampires so I figured I would enjoy this.

The casting is a bit weird. Some characters look 25, which I know is common in teens shows, more in the 90s, early 2000s.

At first watch, it felt cliche and reminded me too much of Twilight - but then I did some research and realized this series was written way before Twilight was! So I guess Twilight ripped this off?

I love the moodiness of the small town Southern setting, and the cinematography is well done.
I was pleasantly surprised to see this is produced by Kevin Williamson! I'm a big fan of Dawson's Creek and the Scream franchise, so if his name is on it, it must be good.

I'm not going to lie, it feels like it's trying to rip off Anne Rice a bit...Stefan's intro is cringe.

Fav characters so far; Damon and Jeremy. I'm not a fan at all of Bonnie, but Elena seems alright. I may grow to really like Caroline.

Loving all these mid 2000s references. Brings me back!

Very interested to see who Katherine was...

I didn't think so either, but I'm giving it a shot! I will say, I was not bored with the pilot.

I think this is why I find many vampire franchises blur together. I've seen part of Legacies, one season so far of The Mayfair Witches, 40 minutes of Twilight and about 10 minutes of the pilot of either this or True Blood, and I honestly have no idea which belongs to which universe!

Ooooh, you're in for a treat!!
Season 1 is kinda weak. They do a LOT of stuff in the pilot that doesn't get carried through the series, and I think it's because they were trying to find their footing and experiment with what kind of lore they wanted to incorporate into the show. Yes, I agree that some of those characters look way too old to be high school aged, but the same can be said for Charisma on Buffy- you just gotta suspend belief. 😉
Some of the character that seem weak in the beginning of Season 1 end up becoming much cooler and more tolerable later in the show. In my opinion, anyway... Interested to hear your thoughts as you go through more episodes!

The vampire diaries tv series is much better than the vampire diaries book (imo). The vampire diaries books were written before Twilight, but the show was filmed after the Twilight books and movie. The Twilight movie was so big, TVD cashed in on the hype. It is extremely similar to Twilight in the first few episodes. Thats why I am perplexed when people say they love TVD but hate the first Twilight movie when this show is pretty much exactly that! In the beginning at least, which is when most are drawn into it. The TVD books were not much like the tv series, but it has been a long time since I read them and I know I didnt like them enough to ever bother re-reading.

Its the sort of show that I tend to binge and it is a bingeable format. Like all long shows, the fatigue can set in if you pace it wrong. So I hope you keep watching so we can read along the ride 😀 If it ends up on free to air somewhere again I would rewatch. There are a lot of storylines within larger season arcs which I forget after a few months anyway.

Honestly gonna be blunt here; don't expect much. Especially if you love Buffy, they copied so much from Buffy. (this really enrages me) They continue to copy from Buffy in the spin off show Legacies.

The plotlines aren't consistent, and the show gets worse over time. As someone who watched TVD before Buffy; Buffy is 100x better.

Not saying you cannot enjoy the show, just a heads up so you might not feel the same frustration I did while watching. Just what to expect

My fav seasons were; season 2, season 3, season 5, season 6.

Least fav; season 1, season 4,

If you don't end up liking Tvd much I highly recommend The Originals, it deserved an Emmy.

Katherine's storyline is the best! The plot twists in season 2 will have you verrryyy surprised. I'm so jealous you get to watch it for the first time

If you're used to strong female characters like Buffy, don't expect the same from here. Male characters are written better here and Elena is just...meh.

Can't wait to see your reaction for season three's villain. One of the best writing I've ever seen

I agree with @SavvyZ Buffy is a coming of age story and The Vampire Diaries is a very poorly written teen drama. It was okay I started watching it with my family in high school but we stopped because we found Elena pathetic. It is an entertaining show with a talented cast just nothing going on under the surface.

Agreed, it's more of a 'feel good' show
You lucky person you, you'll get to see and hear all the stupid mistakes, when the witch and Elena are in the car in the town and a bird (a crow) flies into the windscreen, they drive to the edge of the road in a panic. Yet they are completely ignored by the people on the sidewalk and the other road users. Crappy covers of good songs are played, and that is just for starters, I knew the show would continue to have its problems and I was right.

Alright, I'm back. I had a friend in town then was working a lot, but I'm free now and back in the game. I've watched through episode 4.

Generally, I must say, this show's cast is easy on the eyes. Like, no one is bad looking.

Okay so, Damon. I love him, obviously. He's snarky, intense and charismatic, and unapologetic about being a vampire, much like another favorite vampire of mine. I may be slightly bias as I think this particular actor is gorgeous, but I'm speaking on the character here. Also? There's no way that Elena isn't going to fall in love with him. He's clearly in love with her, and she's clearly attracted to him. I've been careful to avoid spoilers so I honestly don't know what's going to happen, but I'd be willing to bet money on this.

They super rushed Stefan and Elena's first kiss, imo.

Elena's dream about Damon? That shows she's obviously attracted to him. It's only a matter of time before they hook up.

Also, I know as audience with all teen dramas we're supposed to suspend our disbelief in this regard but I find it strange that no one comments on how old Stefan looks in comparison to the other students? Are we supposed to believe the two were turned when they were teens and not 25 like they both look like? There are several comments made that Damon looks older but not Stefan.

Stefan is gorgeous, intelligent and mysterious, but lacks the spunk and charisma Damon has. Him and Elena have good chemistry, and she's obviously crazy about him, but I don't think it can compare with the chemistry I'm sure she'll have with Damon.

Damon has a ring that protects him from the sun just like the Gem of Amara. Huh.

I like Elena so far, she's young but stands her ground and is intelligent and levelheaded. Her, Damon, and Jeremy are my favorite characters so far.

Of course I'm fascinated by who Katherine was. My theroy is probably off base, but I think Elena is a reincarnation of her. We'll see if I'm right.

So select people know that vampires exist? Still seems early to rush this storyline but okay.

Overall, I'm enjoying the show! I'm definitely not bored. It's a good escape which I need now.

Thanks for following along, friends! Please comment! And again, a reminder, PLEASE so spoilers past where I'm at.

Also just saw this show goes for 8 SEASONS! WHAT?! Damn, I didn't think this would be such a commitment...

Just like the Gem of Amara? But it is a different colour isn't it? Them mood rings are such a thing to behold!

Thank god, lol! But seriously this is kinda what I want now. Something I get get into that will take a long time to finish. I cancelled my Roku to save money so I can only watch DVDS now. And I can get the whole show from the library!

I would be a fan of Stelena but she doesn't deserve him.

Slight spoilers but she really does him dirty in later seasons.

Damon is just annoying as hell in my opinion. At least be a bit funnier like Spike.

Interesting to see your predictions, the first season is very slow and meh. The second is way better so I usually just skip the first season on rewatches.

I'm guessing she chooses Damon just like Katherine did.
The original authors of the story took ages to decide what would be a good name for their characters, then when the story gets to be successful and put on the telly, someone decides to change the name of the characters, what do the authors think of the new names?

Hey y'all! I'm slowly making my way through the first season...

Like with their first kiss, I feel Stefan revealing to Elena he was a vampire was rushed, but I get he had no choice but to tell her.

I'm sad about Vicki being killed, but she was definitely portrayed as a tragic character, so it's not surprising to me. Damon offering to erase Jeremy's memory is interesting, but also obviously clearly a move to gain Elena's trust.

It's interesting how Stefan insists there is still some humanity in Damon, but I'm not so sure. Sparing Elena doesn't prove this, nor does his obvious fixation on her.

I definitely did not see it coming that Katherine was a vampire.

Again, there are definitely a lot of elements that feel "cliche" about this series - for one the obvious set up for a love triangle between Damon, Stefan and Katherine/Elena - but I'm reserving judgement until I'm farther along in the series.

So far, I'm definitely enjoying it and looking forward to more.

Excited for your next update! Tag me when you get to s2 episode 1 or just s2 in general, plot picks up fast and it's a really good episode(s).

Damon's struggle with humanity is a tricky thing to explain, and I honestly can't really put it into words. You'll just have to watch and find out.

Question: Do you like Stefen? Cause I love him and he ends up being a pretty badass and interesting character! <3

Honorable mention: Bonnie! I love herrr

I'm watching how actually! I'll tag you for sure when I get to the next season.

Jeremy is my favorite character at this point, I really feel for him. But I do really like Stefan as well. I agree he is an interesting character! I can't wait to see what happens.

I was able to watch TVD's that often I started to note the silly errors in the program . . why quality songs were sung by someone who was not the original singer and a poor rendition was used. That made me think the show was a bit lame, then errors in filming were shown so I thought the show was a bit dumb. Eventually I got rid of the collection of DVD's.
Upon watching other shows I gave myself an interest for how the actors had grown, ie Watching Claire Holt in the Australian TV series ' H2O Just Add Water ' and the film ' Messengers 2 '.
For Phoebe Tonkin I watched the TV series ' H2O Just Add Water ' the Australian film 'Tomorrow When The War Began' then the Vampire Diaries began to get better again.
Phoebe Tonkin and Clair Holt were in H2O together.

Phoebe Tonkin is in a new show too starting soon, Two Years Later I think it is called. I usually like whatever I see her in but this new on is a romance.
Well, Damon is completely out of control. He's ruthless, and has no hesitation in attacking and/or killing anyone he feels like. It's interesting to me what keeps Stefan from killing him, other than that Damon is a main character, of course. Damon is fun to watch, and delightfully evil. He plays a good vampire.

Again, as I've said before, everything with Elena and Stefan seems rushed. The first kiss, saying I love you, having sex...why not draw it out more? It will be interesting to see how he explains the photo of Katherine to her. Elena is staring to irritate me, but I'm liking Stefan more and more.

Bonnie is growing on me, but I still like Caroline better.

Overall, definitely enjoying the show.

Agree, they could have dragged the angsty love out far more!
Just just finished watching S1E11, "Bloodlines."
Wow, a lot happened and was revealed in this episode.

Spotted! Two Whedonverse alums...
Bianca Lawson and Gina Torres! Fun!

I'm guessing Jeremy is going to be the one that finds out about the vampires, since he's doing all this research. Definitely worried for him though as Damon is completely ruthless and will literally not hesitate to kill anyone, anytime if they get in his way or wrong him. But perhaps he has some sense of loyalty, as Elena saved his life? So maybe he'd spare her family at least?

Looks like Damon kills a lot of people's girlfriends...interesting about Alaric's wife...another of Damon's victims I see.
But how is he only just NOW seeing Damon and recognizing him? Haven't they been living in the same small town for weeks now...and Damon was openly dating Caroline, a student of his. How has he not seen Damon before?

So Elena is adopted. My theory was wrong! So she's Katherine's...cousin? Lol, I'm still confused.

Stefan admitting he was stalking Elena without her knowing is so on par with vampire romance, lol. Reminds me of Angel and Buffy.

Stefan admitting he'd rescued Elena from the car wreck was def NOT on my bingo card! Didn't see that one coming at all.

It's going to get REAL interesting if they wake up Katherine...I'm still confused about this though. I thought she was killed in a fire? But then why would she be in a tomb? Is she just asleep?

Maybe in the end, Stefan will end up with Katherine, and Elena with Damon, and it will be really strange, lol. Or maybe the other way around.

And who did Elena run over?

Loving the show...
