Ok, so I need to get this off of my chest but - what was their plan with David? Lyse's all, yeah,

let's drug him. But then they just toss him out, shrug their shoulders and say something about how there is no point in calling the police because they can't help and then they... do nothing. They just go to their respective homes. Like, I'm sorry, but if you feel that a person is shifty enough so you have to drug them then you could at least a) question them, b) get some kind of precaution so they won't hurt you? Why else didn't they just ask him to leave?

The whole thing was just all of them being so deliberately dumb that I felt like Lyse deserved to die at the end. If you're gonna be a dumbass then pay the price

Don't even get me started on Dev and her kids. Why wouldn't she, a witch, believe that they could talk to actual ghosts? More deliberate stupidity.

As for the romance with Weir I'm like, please stop forcing this romance on me. It is awkward and I feel like he's really pressuring her while saying that he isn't... "I don't just want to bang you... I just want all of you", dude chill out. Does he not know that he was the horned God by the way? Did anyone else get that feeling, cause that's odd right?

The ending pissed me off too, no suspense, ended to quickly, then she just - went home?


I get that this is the set up for a series but it was too much of a set up, I needed something more to hang my hat on to actually get interested. But the tempo is too uneven and there are just too many characters for me to care about them. This, to me, felt more like a first draft than a final book, and I have no desire to continue the series. I actually kind of felt like this was one of the worst books I've read and like I should apologize to you guys for suggesting we read it, lol. But you won't know until you try I guess. 🙂

I 100% agree with you, @Taake! I felt like the book was OK until the last section, when I really wanted to throw it across the room! (But I didn't want to break my phone, lol.) It was way too much set up for the series and not enough of a book in and of itself. I felt like I deserved more of a story with some kind of resolution, even if some plot elements were still hanging.

Your spoiler point annoyed the hell out of me, and it was downhill from there.

Yeah, my impression was that the vision/dream thing was not shared. Lyse saw his face but he has no knowledge of it.

I still have no idea if the last chapter was a dream or not, but I don't think I'll be reading the next book to find out.

I'm still glad we read it. Sometimes complaining about a book is fun! And there were some parts that were interesting.

Yes, it really took a turn right around that meeting with David. It was like all of the characters just suddenly became stupid and more plot devices than actual characters. It was very annoying. There isn't really a "hook" to keep you reading either, since the threat of this book (except vagueness about an evil flood or whatever) was eliminated.

Overall I think there was potential here but the story and the writing wasn't developed enough. If Benson had had more time to work on it, I'm sure something decent would've come out. But I imagine she was writing on a deadline and just had to produce something at a certain date.

So true, I love complaining about books. In the case of this one I can't help but feel like I wish the order had been a bit different. Like maybe we would find out about Eleanora in the next book, and spend this book getting to know her so that one would actually care when she died. I feel like this one should have been more battle with evil and then the second one could be developing the mythology. I defiitely won't be reading on though, haha. But it was fun to try this one out, I've been curious about Benson's books for a long time.

Love this this book series, better the the death daughter book series. But the one part I hate is we do not find out what happened to verity & veracity & curious if anyone knows what happened to the kitties let me know.
