When is a toy not a toy?

This makes lawn darts look safe. Hard to believe this was actually sold to children:

My understanding is that alpha radiation is harmless, or at least, can't penetrate the skin, but can still trigger a Geiger counter. And if it's just unrefined uranium, which it likely is, the kid should be fine, assuming he doesn't swallow it. Beta and gamma radiation are what you really need to look out for, as well as the artificial elements higher than 92.
 
Yeah, right, 'cos what kid would ever swallow a bit of a toy? I can't imagine a toy manufacturer to be so dumb as to think that'd never happen.
 
We have accepted the presence of Americium (element 95) in our lives in smoke detectors. At first, it was 1 microgram per detector but most of them are now 0.7 microgram. Don't give these to children either.
