Why are Disney spared backlashes?

The recent drama with Pink made me realise that Disney truly get away with everything.

Now don't get me wrong here. I am NOT white knighting for Pink LOL. Obviously I liked her music and persona but regardless of whether you agree with her views on Israel or Palestine (I don't mean to drag that here.) She played a role in helping to get another artist cancelled so yeah as a person she can do one.

Still whilst I have 0 sympathy for Pink, again I couldn't help but notice that once again we have people showing a double standard in favor of Disney who have donated millions to Israel, yet haven't received anything like as big a backlash and indeed a lot of wokies still "Stan" Disney characters, shows etc and will be going to see Avengers Doomsday this Christmas.

Surely if you feel so strongly about this you are going to block a singer like Pink for comments supporting Israel. Then you'll also block a company that donates MILLIONS to them? Yet.................. no. Again there was a bit of pushback but NOTHING like on the same scale.

Meanwhile all these people who are boycotting Harry Potter because JK Rowling is apparently funding a trans genocide. (Not going to unpack her views here.) Saudi Arabia had 5 million shares in Disney and have a theme park in a country where being gay is illegal! Yet again nothing about that. Try taking your gay or trans friend to Disney Land Abu Dhabi. This passed almost without comment and was quickly forgotten.

Similarly John Barrowman is axed by these people for supposedly being a perv. Whilst his actions where he exposed himself on set were awful and would not be allowed today. They were also consensual joking among friends and he didn't actually attack anyone. Yet these people call him a sexual predator all the time. Meanwhile Disney has a larger number of child predators in its employ than most companies. A sting in 2014 showed that 32 people employed by Disney had been convicted of abuses against children in less than ten years and there have been many charges since going into the 2020s. Also they hired Daniel M Petrocelli, a guy who got Weinstein off with attacking women to crush Gina's case and Scar Jo's. Petrocelli tried to get Weinstein off by bribing his victims in quiet and in one case slut shaming one, by stating he'd reveal all the men she slept with, which would make her look worse in his mind than Weinstein and drag her through court by her hair! Yet you actually had these clowns on sites like tv tropes saying "I hope Disney crush Gina" yeah let's hope the r*** enabler crushes the pioneer for women in sports because we're such feminists.

Speaking of Gina, why did Disney's treatment of her not lead to them being boycotted to the same extent as Joss Whedon's for his treatment of Charisma? Now again please believe me here I am NOT defending Joss. I adore Charisma Carpenter in every way. She is one of my biggest crushes and has consistently been nice to me on Instagram, talking to me regularly, being sweet and really interested in what I had to say about Buffy.

However as nasty as Joss was to her, it wasn't as bad as what Disney did to Gina. All these people who feel they need to bring up what a monster he is when his name is mentioned, downplay his role in creating Buffy (which is a joke) say they can't watch Buffy because of him, compare him to an actual abuser, refuse to let him go to conventions (one guy I know in the media refused to let Joss appear on some show he was in to take a stand against bullying) etc. Why not do the same to anything made by Disney?

Joss fired Charisma in a dirty, underhanded way, getting a lackey to do it by phone, and he made working for him a misery in the later years. He also peered into her personal life and mocked her religious beliefs, asked if she was going to keep her baby etc. He tried to justify this with she had caused problems. Apparently Charisma suffered from bad anxiety and had trouble remembering her lines, which got bad enough that Sarah Michelle Gellar didn't want to share the scene with her in Angel. Also she did get a tattoo on her arm which is a problem in a vampire show, would get her hair cut between episodes that caused continuity problems (there is a scene in one episode of season 2 where her hair changes between shots LOL.) These were legit problems, but not unreasonable ones on her part and ones that as the boss Joss should have dealt with a more sympathetic, mature way.

Instead he actually made Charisma's anxiety WORSE and again no matter what to treat an employee like that where they are fired by phone by a lackey is the height of cowardice and scumbaggery.

However, Disney did ALL of that and worse to Gina. Hmmm let's see. They let her endure months of abuse from entitled freaks online, making her working experience a traumatic experience like Charisma's. These people were upset she didn't have a parasocial relationship with them. She is not LGBTphobic, and her post did not trivialize the holocaust. It simply talked about political dehumanization. It didn't even mention republicans. They jumped on that as a pathetic excuse to justify their abuse which included vile comments against her hygiene, looks, sexuality, (hilariously they called her a fat dyke for all their faux progressive boasting.)

They also stalked her with drones, which forced her to move from her home of 15 years and live in a motor home for 2 years. The stress got so bad she put on weight, cut herself and became so depressed she could barely walk. Yet Disney offered her............ NO PROTECTION, no defense in the media the way they have to other actors who've received backlashes.

Instead they peered into her private life, demanded she renounce her political beliefs, mocked her religious beliefs and insisted SHE attend a meeting with 50 people wanting to insult her to make amends. Then they fired her via social media and insulted and smeared her in the process. Imagine finding out you're fired from people gloating about it to you. On top of that the damage to her career was far more intense. Charisma went to work on Charmed almost instantly after Angel and worked consistently. Some say it harmed her career as she never got a leading role again.

That's a fair analysis, but that may have happened anyway. Not because she's not gorgeous and talented enough. I'd cast her in a leading role today instantly never mind in the early 00s. However very few actors in Buffy went on to have that kind of career. James Marsters for instance never had a lead role, neither did Alexis Denisof, J August Richards, even Amy Acker only had supporting roles since. David Boreanaz is an outlier not the norm, and he wasn't even a good friend of Joss.

Gina meanwhile? Has basically had nothing since thanks to Disney. Here look at their filmography on IMDB.

Charisma's straight after Angel.

Gina's before and after the Mando.

A shocking contrast. Look how busy Gina was in the years before and the massive gap, compared to Charisma who was practically never out of work straight after Joss fired her and even got a gig on a bigger show than Angel (Charmed.) How can you blacklist and erase Joss Whedon from memory, for doing the same thing as Disney, but 100 times less.

Compared to them Joss actually looks decent, as at least he didn't badmouth Charisma all over town, also even in his franchise, at least he brought Charisma back for an episode everybody loved and gave her some closure. Disney cut Cara out largely of even the Lego Mando and Groku movie. (Whilst hiring Rosario Dawson who was friends with Donna Hylton that helped torture, kill and rape a gay man. I might add that Joss at the very least targeted Charisma for something that she did, even if his response was obviously cruel, and disproportionate, where as seen with Rosario Dawson. Disney clearly don't mind others doing extremely dodgy stuff.)

Yet in ALL cases you bring this up to redditors, or people on social media and they'll squirm and twist to try and excuse Disney. "Hiring Petrocelli was just business, and child abusers will gravitate towards areas where there kids so it's not Disney's fault." But ignore all the nuances with John Barrowman, like where his friends encouraged him to do those jokes, Liz Sladen mentions she thought they were hilarious, he did them during love scenes where he was already naked etc. "It doesn't matter how disproportionate Disney where to Gina, they had a legal right" well okay so did Joss, but why do you get high and mighty against him? "You can't expect Disney not to make money in bad places." Okay well you can't expect Pink not to pander the industry then that mostly supports Israel? "Disney's too big for a boycott to work" Well okay so is billionaire JK Rowling?

It's such hypocrisy across the board. I used to think it was just because they were Disney fans, but honestly it's worse than even that. They are cowards. Tackling Disney is too big a deal. Many of these self righteous cancellers hope to get some career in media. Also on top of that as Disney do have their fingers in so many franchises, you actually have to do your research to know how to boycott them. These people are lazy too.

They can easily boycott a singer, or even a single author or franchise like Rowling and look good to their friends, but a big company? No that's too much effort. This should always be brought up every time these freaks try to get on their high horse.

Disney has a near monopoly over the television industry right now, challenged only by Netflix, which is also an exploitative company. They've absorbed Hulu, major IPs like Marvel and Star Wars, and now they constantly churn out sequels and prequels and low effort slop television for the most part with an occasional good project. If anything, Disney has more reason to be boycotted than individual celebrities and franchises.

One thing I'd like to add to this conversation is the hypocrisy when it comes to the moral discussion around piracy and buying secondhand physical media. Whenever Disney's crimes are brought up, I've come across people online who say "just pirate it" or "buy the DVDs secondhand." But apparently, for example when it comes to Harry Potter, if you pirate it or buy secondhand DVDs you're still a bad person? I was talking about this with some people the other day, actually, this opinion is more common than you would think and it's such a double standard when Disney has arguably harmed more people than individual billionaires like JKR.

(Amending this to add that I also don't agree with much of what any of the people mentioned in the original post have done, especially people who've been complicit in the film industry's abuse, but I have a strong belief that a person shouldn't make moral judgments against others if they don't have the strength to stand on their own moral convictions.)

Boycotting the entire world isn't practical. Some things pick up traction and in the moment people push there for change. Also there's personal disappointment. No one expects better from corporations. When a person you like or respect turns out to be a genocide supporter or coward it hits different.

This is very true. Perhaps people often react with more anger toward the crimes of individuals over corporations because it's a lot more personal to them. And this occurs regardless of the scale of the offense.

And when it comes to boycotting, while I understand doing it just to not support a certain company or person, I agree that boycotting the whole world isn't practical. In the past, boycotting has mostly only worked when it is unified and targeted toward making a specific change (i.e. worker's rights). And honestly, I think it might be more effective to boycott larger corporations to make an actual change in society or even, on a less serious level, in the entertainment industry. It's just really difficult, as the original poster states, to get people to actually do that. And this is a nuanced topic, I mean more in regard to Disney and other brands that aren't necessities, not as much big supermarkets or places that might be a person's only affordable source of goods.

Well Gina Carano really did do nothing wrong. It was just that a bunch of people who wanted a parasocial relationship with her didn't get it.

It makes me laugh for all the talk of incels, nice guys etc, the supposed libs and progressives attitude to her was the biggest case of entitlement I've ever seen to a female celeb.

The others meanwhile, obviously Joss Whedon was a pretentious, hypocritical douche to Charisma, whilst John Barrowman did do something wrong, but he wasn't the only one responsible. Everybody on set egged him on, and the response was completely over the top. As for JK Rowling, I always disliked her. She is tribal, hysterical and lumps people all together regardless of whether she is on the left or right. Remember when she called Pewdiepie a Nazi?

Finally Pink, yeah that was disappointing for me too, but again plenty of others have been awful that way.

Admittedly I don't really know anything about Gina Carano, but I agree about Joss and JKR. JKR in particular seems to like to start fights, and she states her opinions with such vitriol it is hard to take her seriously.
I read a book about Disney recently, and learned how hard the company works to protect its image, as well as the reputations of its stars. I'm sure there are many scandals they've covered up.

100%. Even what has gone public about the treatment of young Disney Channel actors is horrific. It's such a huge company so I bet what the public knows is only scratching the surface of their crimes.
Disney had a horrible reputation among the animators that were its first creative geniuses. The animators called the place 'Mauschwitz", a play on Auschwitz, the Nazi death camp. It was said that the managers would say, "If you don't come in Saturday, don't bother coming in Sunday", the further answer to sweat shop standard, "If you don't come in Saturday, don't bother coming in Monday". It is easy to believe the claim that Walt Disney was an Illuminatus.

LOL and to think you get this idiots that think they are woke, on both sides of the culture war sadly. The anti woke crowd or the chuds call them commies, even though they RUINED people because they thought they were commies) whilst the woke side say Gina Carano ruined their image more than the shares in countries that kill homosexuals and stopping a grieving dad paying tribute to his dead 4 year old son because they couldn't get money out of it.

People can be duped into believing anything i firmly believe that.

This Is because the Disney adult millennials exist lol

You’d think if they could afford Disney these people would maybe donate to causes like Gaza Soup Kitchen but they never do and simply criticize the less fortunate who cannot even attempt a boycott.

It’s very performative; it’s less about the humanitarian crises and more about a morality competition with their fav celebs

100%! These companies know everybody is struggling and cannot participate in a boycott

Sorry bump just because I DESPISE Disney so much. God I really think I need to get a punching bag with the Disney logo. I always hated them even as a kid, I felt their stuff was mostly hollow and insincere. I have good instincts sometimes.

I like the movies from Disney, not Disney itself, today they are a hungry hippo who swallows all what is something worth---> hulu/fox/star wars etcetera
