Since @crazy chicklet created one for Buffy, I thought I would toss one up for Angel.
Season 1
Best: Much like Buffy, I feel like everyone in the first season is really solid. Obviously we can't have the show without Angel, and I like how they're doing the monster of the week thing, but he's not exactly connecting with people yet. Then enter Doyle, who is his connection to the PTB, and eventually Cordelia who is his connection to the past but also his present. Eventually we lose Doyle tragically, but we gain Wesley, which is another familiar face, and we see him starting to come into his own. He's helpful, he feels needed, and he starts to break out of that mentality and belief the Watchers Council instilled in him.
Worst: Probably Kate or Lindsey. I feel like they never knew what they wanted to really do with these characters. Kate was someone Angel tried to connect with, and they hinted at her possibly becoming a love interest, and then she mostly hates Angel's guts after what happens with her father. And then there is Lindsey who works for Wolfram & Hart, and at one point turns his back on them because he doesn't want innocent children to die. He only has a conscience when it suits him.
Season 2
Best: This one was harder for me, but I picked Lorne. His introduction in season 2 along with Caritas added a whole new element to the show. Near the end of the season, we also get some serious development for his character, what with going to Pylea. I also loved at the end of season 2 when he says that he needed to come back just to realize that he didn't need to. I think so many people feel like they need closure of some kind, especially when they feel guilty, but sometimes you have to do what is best for you, and I always thought Lorne was a prime example of that. Not to mention, Lorne was constantly Angel's voice of reason in season 2.
Worst: Again, Kate or Lindsey. Kate spends most of the season hating Angel and the supernatural. I like how her storyline is a great depiction of what happens when someone is hellbent on revenge but also discovers the truth about the supernatural, but she's so unpleasant as a character and takes out her rage on other people. As for Lindsey, again, he's only good when it suits him. It felt like he was just there so Darla had someone to talk to when she wasn't interacting with Angel, and then the thing with his hand, he suddenly gains a conscience again. I just never cared for him as a character, and the whole cowboy thing is definitely a self-insertion for Christian Kane. They even did it in Supernatural when he guest starred on there.
Season 3
Best: Fred and Cordy. I adore Fred. She brought a whole new dynamic to the show. Cordelia grew even more as a person in season 3. I didn't care for the storyline with Gru, but in regards to her powers, becoming part demon, training with Angel, and so on, we see how much she has really changed from her life in Sunnydale.
Worst: Holtz. I know he's the villain and so that seems kind of cliché, but his whole schtick gets old so fast. He hunts down vampires and makes it his life's mission to get revenge on Angelus and Darla, but in the process, he's just as bad as them, just the human equivalent. He preys on people who have lost someone due to vampires and then manipulates them into joining his cause while they're still grieving. He uses them at his own expense. Justine thinks Holtz loves her, then he leaves her behind just so he can take Connor into the hell dimension and raise him as his own son. In that time, he twists and manipulates Connor into hating Angel, and when Connor even remotely starts to connect with Angel, then he kills himself to make it seem like Angel did it. I guess on some level he's a good villain because I hate his guts so much, but the fact that he's so hypocritical is what irritates the heck out of me.
Season 4
Best: Wesley. I just love how dark he got after the events of season 3, but in season 4 he also starts to have a bit of redemption. However, I do think the main group is pretty solid in this season with the exception of one.
Worst: I know a lot of people would pick Connor, and yes, he annoys me, but I can at least understand some reasoning behind his behavior. However, I think the worst character in season 4 is Cordelia. I know, I know, she's been taken over by Jasmine, but it's the fact that the acting is all over the place. I love Charisma, and I know a lot was going on back then, but after I rewatched the series, some of her facial expressions and other things......I don't know how it wasn't obvious she was evil. A lot of it was very cheesy, over-the-top, and was not my favorite.
Season 5
Best: Fred/Illyria. Fred takes over the science department, becomes a leader in that regard, and is one of the few people to work on saving Spike. I'm not really a huge Spike fan, but it just goes to show that Fred is a pure soul who wants to do the right thing. Then for her to finally be interested in Wesley and to tragically be taken over by an old one who hollows her out, only for her to become that very demon. Huge props to Amy Acker, especially when she has to quickly revert back to acting as Fred, or Illyria pretending to be Fred.
Worst: Spike. I know a lot of people love Spike, but I personally never liked his addition to season 5. I think it threw off the whole dynamic. Also not a fan of Eve or them bringing back Lindsey. And I couldn't stand the couple of episodes with Andrew.
Also want to give a huge shoutout - and not sure if anyone noticed this - but how freaking supportive Lorne was throughout the seasons. In season 3 he had his club and home ruined, and then was basically a glorified babysitter for Connor. In season 4, he sat by Cordelia when she was in her coma, and I guess you could argue that being part of the whole Jasmine mind control, but for a being who thrived on peace and helping people, he still helped them foil Jasmine's plan. In season 5, he works himself so hard he has his sleep removed, and then he agrees to later kill Lindsey which is against everything he believes in. Lorne is definitely one of my favorite characters throughout.
