Buffy Reboot - Characters that can't be recast

I am sorry, but what? What the heck are you even saying? Have you seen any show recently? 😱 If anything, television shows creators are much more free nowadays to do what they want with their characters. What a joke!

Spike could and would still be able to say whatever fits his character. That was the thing about him, he was honest about what he thought and what he wanted. Same with Cordy and Anya. And anyway, Spike was far from being a troublesome character if you want to consider all the 'isms'. There is a ton of worse characters on television even at this moment.

As for the OP, I do not want anybody recast. Make your freaking own new characters and bring back the REAL characters/actors from the Buffyverse. Why are people even making so many threads about recasting when nowhere has it been implied that this is what they are going to do (aside from an African-American actress having the lead role and possibly being named Buffy)? This is just ridiculous.

What the hell is your problem? It's one thing to disagree with somebody, it's another to get all high and mighty about it.

The point I was trying to make is that, in today's overly sensitive climate, Spike wouldn't be allowed to go insulting characters by calling them "poof" or "poofter" because it is seen as a derogatory term against gay people. LGBT has moved on since the days of Buffy. It would be no different than if he went around calling a transgender character a "tranny".

IF this show gets off the ground, they are going to want to market it to the widest audience possible to prove that it can be just as successful as the original. I don't think they're going to go for GOT level violence and sex, and they can't be seen to be endorsing a character that uses derogatory terms to insult people. If a character does insult a character by calling them a "poofter" then you can bet that character is going to be shown getting a comeuppance in order to show that behaviour shouldn't be tolerated.

I think because Spike and Angel are not of this time, then yes they should be able to have views that are not as accepted now, they're vampires, they don't have to be accepting of everything.

Spike and Angel are probably the two that I can't see working. Spike is a character that probably should not work but does. I also can't see Angel working. It just feels like they will cast some actor who is too pretty and not manly enough for either Angel or Angelus.

To be honest, I don’t think it’s Spikes character that is going to be a problematic one. First of all, I don’t think most audiences back then even realized half of what he said was as bad as it was because it was British insults, which was why he got away with
It. If he was going around saying “ fag” it would have been a different story. Second, he was a bad guy even then, and he constantly got punched in the face and picked on. He was a buttmonkey for a lot of the series and didn’t achieve hero status until late season 5 maybe and then once he got a soul, in which he dialed back ALOT of his problematic offensiveness. ( word wise anyway). And even now people still adore and love his character no matter what he says or does. When it comes to vampires, a lot of leeway is given because they are literally beings from a different time, political correctness doesn’t apply to them IMO and much is forgiven. People realize that.

I think the character that won’t fit in today or that won’t be adaptable is Xander. He’s the one that people cannot get over or forgive. He’s the one in this sensitive culture that will most likely be retooled into a tree hugging, beta male who blogs about veganism and how the women’s march on Washington changed his life. Also he has three cats.

Isn't it more acceptable nowadays to say things that are openly discriminatory? Especially as retaliation to perceived PC culture.

Just a thought.

Yes. Yes it is.
Why does everyone keep calling Buffy stupid?
Buffy was academically LAZY and preoccupied with SLAYER duties.
She was NOT academically stupid.
She may not have been genius smart like Willow, but she was far from stupid.
Buffy did very well on her SATs. She could have went to a better college if wasn't for her SLAYER duties.
The very first principal and a teacher in s1 both saw potential in Buffy. Unfortunately, both were killed off so Buffy was left with no academic faculty that believed in her.
I'm sorry, but I just don't get where people get this idea that Buffy is stupid.
She may have ditzy moments, but hell so do a lot of very academically intelligent people as well.
The only one on the show that seemed to truly struggle academically was Xander. But, he was apathetic as well, so we will never know if it was the smarts or just pure utter apathy.

Thank you! I was not academically super smart and that's a thing I love about Buffy. There is different kind of smart and some people like me (and Buffy) do not want to be the best in school and don't thrive to compete with the Willow's of this world. However, this doesn't mean we can't go to college (which I did) or be smart, we just are not book smart like some would say!

BTW @BuffyBot22 she also got to lead a discussion group in one of her university courses (just to make your list complete).

One of her slayer duties, had she decided to accept it, was reading the Watchers' Handbook like Kendra did.

Look at Buffy in "Doublemeat Palace". She could have been a millionaire along with Willow after the discovery that the "meat process" had no actual meat in it. And what does she do? She negotiates getting her old job back. The episode should have been "Burger, Fries and a Shakedown".

When the final showdown came in Season 7 and so many people had left town that everything was open to her for the pillaging, what did they do? They got groceries (including Jaffa cakes) at the supermarket and first aid supplies from the hospital. Why not get a tank truck full of gasoline, open the hellmouth, pump in fuel and throw in a match?

Actually I get why Buffy didn't do theses things. Blackmailing and stealing aren't really things good people like Buffy would do. She would feel super guilty about it. This is actually what Faith keps mocking her about throught out the serie. Buffy woulnd't do it because it's wrong 🙂

Also, for the Handbook I get it. I hated book at school if they weren't literature, I mostly didn't read them because they bore me. I tend to learn less by reading books and more with pratical exercises and I think Buffy learn more in the same way.

I wouldn't say Buffy was academically lazy, just that she didn't have time to sit down and study for hours on end. She took her books to the Bronze and on patrol with her so she could get some studying in, but she was constantly being interrupted by vampires. She certainly wasn't stupid.

The only one I would call academically lazy is Oz. He apparently "tests well" yet allowed himself to be held back a year by not bothering to go to summer school or do the work that would've enabled him to pass the first time. He wasn't stupid, he just couldn't be bothered.

I think Xander lacks focus. Even in later years, he was constantly jumping from job to job and it was only around Season 5/6 that he settled down enough to stay in a job long term. During high school, I think he would get easily distracted. He didn't spend a lot of time at home, so like with Buffy, it's not like he would sit down and study for hours on end.

I could ask you the same thing. I have been back on BB for only three days and every time I see you post something it is always about the same thing and you speak as if what you think of today's world is an undeniable truth. Well I am sorry, but I disagree quite a bit with you.

First of all, today's ''climate'' is not anymore sensitive than it used to be. I think that what you are looking for is that more people nowadays are aware of the need to be respectful toward other human beings, and by that I mean all human beings. As I see it, that is far from a bad thing. However, for some people it is troublesome, and I do not think this thread is the best place to discuss that topic.

Second of all, as I said, you would be wrong in believing that about a remade Spike. Spike was always honest about what he thought, and he did not give a shit about what other people would think of him or his views (at least for the most part... *cough* Buffy *cough*). You seem stuck on words like ''poof'', as if there aren't dozens of characters on television right now who use homophobic, sexist, and racist slurs in all kind of contexts. 😛 It might not go along with your narrative, but it is a fact. And most people do not care about it, because everyone knows that people like them exist. Anyhow, as far as offensive terms go ''poof'' and ''poofter'' are quite weak. I bet most North American watchers did not even understand what that meant.

Finally, you do not know what their marketing plan will be at all. You are simply summoning your own fears and apprehensions of what they might do, given some of the trends followed by certain creators in the past years... and you make it seems as if there is no other way that they would build this new 'Buffy'. Now, I do agree that I doubt they will push for a GoT level of violence and sex, but that was not really what our argument was about--it was about the impossibility (or so you claimed) of certain characters, more specifically Spike, using derogatory terms in a possible remake. To be blunt, I do not see how the creators of a show would be seen as ''endorsing'' a character who, as you call it, would be using ''derogatory terms'' just because they built him/her. If that was the case, then quite a lot of showrunners would be regarded as homophobic, sexist, and racist assholes right now. 😀 As for such characters getting a comeuppance, well they tend to be the 'bad guys', so yea they would probably get their ass kicked at some point. 😉

I bet most North American watchers did not even understand what that meant.
I think as British as the Watchers Council was, even North American Watchers would know what that meant from speaking with their peers.

Sorry. I saw a shot and took it.

FYI my point was that they couldn't have a "good guy" character using derogatory terms otherwise they'd be seen as endorsing such behaviour because it would be one of the "heroes" doing it. They can have a "bad guy" say stuff within reason (they won't use the N word at all) to their hearts content because they're the bad guy so it would just be another reason for the heroes to kick their arse.

Well, guess what, good news,! This is all a moot point now because the writer on the new series has said that the original characters won't be replaced.

I'll ignore your first comment because heaven forbid I speak with a confident demeanour when I post things.

"As far as offensive terms go ''poof'' and ''poofter'' are quite weak". They're not if you happen to be a gay man. They won't use the terms: a) because of alienating part of their audience and b) because the terms are considered discriminatory and labels the character as homophobic (and backward looking). They didn't quite connote in the same way in the 90s. Wanker's okay though!

Completely agreed

Depends on where do you live. Certainly not in France.
Nowadays you say a little thing about black people or gays, even something not necessarily bad, and well people in France will say that you're racist and homophobic. An example, two days ago on a facebook french group about Buffy reboot : Some people (me included) were saying we don't want a black Buffy and there were people who said we were racist !

So, sorry but I can agree with DeadlyDuo about the society being more sensitive nowadays.

I think Buffy was a bit lazy, but her slayer duties definitely distracted her focus from school. I think it was a duel factor with her. But either way, she was by no means stupid.

And I totally agree about Oz!

Hey speaking of Oz, I think he would be a hard one to recast.
Seth Green just played him so effortlessly.

Effortlessly I'm not sure. I have heard Seth Green wanted to leave the show because he was too tired to play Oz. Is that true ? However, this story with Veruca 😡, even Veruca herself 😡😡😡😡
Well he made it look effortless to me.
I know he was more of a hit at the time. So he probably wanted off the show to do other projects

So true! Finding a new Oz would be sooooooo hard! I do wish he had a new Veruca thought. The character had so much potential but the actress...not so much!
