In season three of Angel, in my opinion, we see the characters interacting at the height of the chemistry that we ever got to see on the show.
This chemistry surpasses anything I personally ever saw in the Buffyverse, in terms of the depth that it afforded in the overall presentation.
By season three, the core cast are all really finding their feet as characters, and you really feel that they belong in their roles perfectly as they bounce off one another.
As a sidenote, in the earlier years, to me, the characters still felt a little underdeveloped but by season three, everyone is doing just great; a fine job.
While the season three arc is well executed, a lot of the episodes have great depth to them, without being overly dark or morbid (a la season four). The resulting chemistry and stories being told by the cast result in something truly special a lot of the time.
This chemistry is so evident during this particular season, in fact, that you can't imagine the cast members being anything other than really good friends and well connected.
Having re-watched Angel many times, I honestly think that season three, for the reasons listed above, stands out as a true work of art, going deeper than almost any television I have ever seen personally. Its a true joy at times to behold.
