Question: Favourite Location for Angel HQ

What is your favourite location for Angel HQ?

Hey guys,

The settings, or locations, of where Angel Investigations was situated greatly affected the storytelling of the show, and each had its great moments for specific reasons.

I'm curious, which is your favourite location?

From the cosy, intimate, downtown LA vibe of the first season office..

To the more expansive, fifties decor hotel setting of the Hyperion Hotel during the mid seasons..

Or, you might even think that Angel Investigations worked best operating out of Wolfram & Hart in the fifth season..

I just love the Hyperion, it's so atmospheric. I think the small office fits season one perfectly, and I love the basement apartment, but it's so small that you can see it'd be a problem, especially with adding more characters. I like that the W&H offices allows for more light and new spaces, but it's an office… it's pretty dull.

So Hyperion wins, hands down for me. I wish they would've explored the space more.
 
I know it is only for three episodes, but I think Cordelia's apartment deserves a mention. It is a lot nicer than both the Hyperion and the S1 office.

I've never liked the Hyperion much. It find it sterile, impersonal and ... oh so dark. Even for a hotel, it doesn't feel very homely. The BtVS sets all feel very lived in. They took so much care decorating those. One of the fun things about the HD versions is that you can see all the stuff clearly. If they make HD version of AtS, I doubt it would be much to discover. Much empty!

The Wolfram and Hart offices is a fun set. It's brighter and there is always a lot going on. The Hyperion was an interesting place in its time, but when AI moves in, it feels like a hollowed out ruin. The Wolfram and Hart building keeps its character. I love how you can pick up a phone and get asked to dial such and such to sacrifice your grandma to Mammon or whatever. And Harmony is at her desk with her figurines. It feels like one of those wacky old fashioned sitcoms with insane premises.

The set itself may not be that interesting. It is mostly all the activity. Camels, number 5 delivering mail, demons coming and going, the halloween party, Lorne in his insane outfits, etc.

Yeah, I have to agree with you there.

The Hyperion really came into its own in season three and the first half of season four.

So much drama happened there, though the tones are quite sombre and dark which some people might find off-putting.
 
That's hard. I like the season 1 set, for it's emphasis of Angel being a vampire. The Hyperion is more atmospheric, but it's ridiculously oversized. It was so much easier when he lived in an industrial mansion.
 
As far as all of Angel's homes put together, here's my list:

1. Hyperion Hotel
2. Sunnydale Apartment
3. L.A. Batcave
4. Crawford Mansion
5. W&H

The Hyperion is flat-out my favorite set in the entire Jossverse x100. It's so beautiful and atmospheric. It's a character all on its own. It's the gothic horror castle that had a baby with Art Deco. It looks like it has a history of horrific events down every corridor, a basement cage and a collapsing attic that matches its owner, but at the same time also homey, familial and intimate.

The mansion and W&H unfortunately suffer a bit for having a lack of Angel's personal effects and personality.

The mansion had a ton of epic moments, but it always looks so empty like it never fully became his home. It's a big, empty living room (Acathla and the manacles spruced it up) and a small bedroom, unfortunately. It's all a bit "modern art" for old Angel.

While the apartment and Batcave are his smallest residences, they're stuffed to the gills with his historical artifacts, weapons, aesthetic and personality (the red bedspread has major symbolism, too).

W&H is the most impersonal of his sets and it just looks wrong to have lit the show that brightly. The old W&H building in the Lindsey/Lilah days was more atmospheric and foreboding.

I prefer the LA office in season one.
It's more intimate, and personal which suits the show great in the beginning.

The Hyperion Hotel just feel large, empty and boring to me.
W&H office even more so. lol

Angel’s bedroom was under the LA office wasn’t it?
I voted for the LA office because I enjoyed seeing Angel’s bedroom and the elevator, it was close quarters and just gave us better scenes.

Yeah, the W&H ... I mean vampires and daylight just don't mix. I get what they were going for, but it doesn't hold up as a classic. Plus, we lost the Hyperion, and I really liked that hotel.

I like the Mansion. I mean, we are told it's a mansion, we only really see like three rooms and a garden. But it's a great place to cuddle besides a fire, reading "Philosophy for Promiscuous College Students" or whatever.

The only thing I don't like about the Hyperion, is the lack of defenses. Now, I think they realized this as the series ran on, but frankly, it seemed like anyone could get into that place. Also, I think having a giant swimming pool that was never drained is pretty goofy. I mean, wouldn't mold be an issue?
 
Pool upkeep is so much harder than it looks too! Where was the pool? I cant remember it, maybe it was heated for night time nudie swims. Tis the only reason I'd have a pool.

I agree on the mansion too, I really liked it but it was pretty impractical for humans. The hotel was at least habitable for all Angels mates.

In "The Price," they find a swimming pool under the ballroom. It's been a while, but I recall it being filled up enough for the parasites to live in.
Definitely loved the Hotel! I loved how some of them lived there and how it was easy to house guests. Plus it was so huge.
