Riley’s dorm room

Can we talk about Riley’s burgundy sheets and his HEADBOARD. Like who brings that to a college dorm?

I don't think that Riley would have had any real input as to how his room was furnished. It was probably that way when he first moved in. Also remember, Riley's "dorm" was almost certainly used by Initiative personnel, who were most likely working working under the guise of either Assistants or Counselors, in order to allow them more leeway in their work schedules, so it would make more sence to expect his quarters to be a bit more luxurious than any student's room. He also obviously had no roommate, which should have been a giveaway that he was more privileged than any regular student.

As for the sheets, there are several possible answers. One, he wanted to impress Buffy (or whoever girl he wound up bringing up there initially) Two, they were on sale at Wal Mart, and he just happened to like the color. Three, Buffy gave them to him after she saw his grungy white ones. Four, some of his teammates gave them to him as a joke, since he was apparently the only one there who was sharing his bed with anyone. And my personal favorite, five, they were originally white, and he washed them with a pair of red socks (okay, that one is a stretch, but I just can't see him using pink sheets under any circumstances. Jonathan, maybe, Andrew, certainly, but not Riley)

Ha! This is SO true! Maybe Riley had deceptively expensive tastes, and not the usual crappy futon we all have in college! I mean, he was a graduate student so he's a bit older and more mature then the undergrads I guess.

Strength to strength. He clearly had some military time to be an elite solider, and an undergraduate degree, you know, Fred's age. He also was stationed on a University Campus, which nobody does without the hope of getting laid. So, appeal to the girl who prefers older men, wants to sleep in a real bed, not on a recycled couch, and finds the idea of dating Cyclops from the X-men appealing. Or a Methodist version of Cyclops. He can't be Lutheran, the Church didn't have a Communion Rail. I mean, you need to find your niche.

Also the burgundy sheets are a theme for when Buffy sleeps with someone. The first two times (Angel and Parker) she wakes up alone but the third time (Riley) she wakes up and he is still there.

@AlphaFoxtrot Maybe there was a special offer on red bedsheets hence why Angel, Parker and Riley all had the same colour. They might have even bought them all at the same time, standing in a queue at the till behind one another, unaware that in the next few years they would all have the same girl in common.

Riley doesn't live in a dorm. He lives in a frat house. What I find questionable is that he has the room to himself. How many people are living in this house? How big is this house? It can't just be him, Graham, and Forrest?

Although I had questions about the roommate situation for basically everyone who wasn't Buffy and Willow. Oz and Tara both seem to have rooms to themselves with full sized beds instead of the twin sized like Buffy and Willow have, and Oz and Tara did live in freshman dorm halls. Housing at UC Sunnydale seems incredibly random.

Graduate Assistants were considered adult students by colleges, and were usually given better housing options. Plus, not really a college student, military personnel at a top secret facility.

Although, I think it would be hilarious if Riley did have a muggle roommate.

Maybe he did have a roomate - hotbedding style. That would explain the strict wake up routine too. Clearing out in time for the next hot body to slip in between those sheets for the day.

All the dorm rooms were ridiculous. Buffy's was big enough to land a plane in as they say. I never saw rooms like that back in the day. Very nice digs. I guess Joyce's mortgage was paid off because I always wondered how she kept it going on the fast food salary in addition lol. That house was gorgeous.

Someone commented that all TV apartments and houses are much bigger than would be realistic, because trying to fit the cameras into a 10x20 or smaller room would be a tad tricky, let alone having people actually move around.

She couldn't have. Having a storyline based on not having much money when the people writing such clearly don't know what that means does not work.

Season 6 had them ignore so many things in order to crowbar their "plots" into "working."

i dont remember much about Riley's dorm room just the women's. apparently Tara had a single that was enormous and filled with things twice as nice as anything i've got. i do remember the guy who played Graham was one of the least convincing actors ive ever seen ;p. no poor folks in buffy land

Yeah, rooms on television are always too large. I always go back to the Cosby show, which is probably the most expensive real estate on the planet, and would be very comfortable, but very claustrophobic. You should not have been able to turn the front room into a dance hall.

I don't know that their house was that unrealistic though. The dad was a doctor and the mom was a lawyer; they had money. It's the house in Home Alone that has me genuinely curious what the parents did to afford that.

The father secretly was a burglar himself. 🤣 Seriously, that kitchen/dining room was crazy.

If I remember correctly from behind-the-scenes stuff I watched, the mother was a fashion designer and the father was a businessman in advertising.
