"Katie Lucas: Who did you like together with Buffy the most: Angel, Riley, or Spike?

JW: You know what, I liked Spike. With angel it’s too “Romeo and Juliet”. Which means, as soon as it happens you’re bored. Riley, you know he was a well-adjusted person who loved her in a much, much healthier way than the other two guys. Nobody wants to see that. With Buffy and Spike, they had a real Beatrice and Benedick kind of relationship, in “Much Ado About Nothing”. I think with the wedding, she would have tried to do something fast, but he would have made it elaborate and done everything wrong. It would have been extraordinarily counter-intuitive, and awesome!"

"Will Buffy ever love Spike?

SMG: There’s a part of me that will always believe that Angel is Buffy’s true love. That there will be a piece of her heart that will always be with him for the rest of her life. It doesn’t mean that’s the person that she’s meant to be with eternally.

The thing about Buffy and Spike is they understand each other on a level that nobody else understands her. They’ve both lived a hundred lives and I think there’s a connection there that we will see evolve over the next couple of years where she realizes that he really is someone that she can trust, someone that’s a companion to her and someone that really understands her unlike anybody else."

"Some would say Angel and Buffy really had more of an idealized first love while Spike and Buffy have the more adult, messy, kind of love which is more realistic. That's right. It's not idealized and it's just so often ugly and yet when James Marsters does stuff where you look in his face and you go, 'Oh, my God, he loves her so much!' Ahh! It's just so wonderful."

"How do you follow-up her romance with Angel? I like the romance with Spike better. I'm more interested in the heat between those two characters because I felt Buffy and Angel had romantic love. Spike and Buffy have something so much more complicated that it's got that romance and all this other stuff on top of it which makes it so interesting for me."

"I've been interested in Principal Wood this year. But my number one has got to be the Buffy and Spike love story. I think that is just a gorgeous story."

"I think Buffy would be immensely sad if Spike were to die – she'd be devastated! Don't think for a minute that she wouldn't be. As for where she'd go after this imagined death of Spike, she certainly wouldn't be looking to jump into a new relationship, with anyone, for a good long while..."

"I don't exactly think Buffy considers ensouled Spike a completely different version than non-ensouled Spike. I think that she accepts that the demon that drove some primal instincts made Spike th I kind of man she couldn't love. Spike was a good guy before he was a vampire, and the demon that took up really state inside of him brought all the nastiness, evil, and desire for power to the surface. And even without a soul, Spike loved Dru in the only way he knew how. And he did love Buffy, but not in the way that Spike with a soul could, can, does. That distinction - the way Spike could be able to love - is something that Buffy has only started to recognize." (Angel & Faith #10)

they are all clever people 😀
(Though I heard that SMG changed opinion once more lately. That woman can't make up her mind lol)

Yeah... she keeps calling him "my Angel", "immortal", making Bangel collages... weird.

agreed. and imo is also disrespectful of her husband. hell, if my girl kept making those kind of comments about her ex I wouldn't like it a little bit! I have to say I was a big fan of SMG before discovering Buffy, but what I've learned lately is really disappointing 🙁

Just for the record, I was saying this way before those quotes ever came out. Bangel was the cliche that had been overdone, literally, for centuries, and the main thing that it established was that Buffy had to have a first love, just like everyone does, because without a first love, there can never be a second, third, or twenty fifth love, if that's how long it takes to find her Final Love. I'm not saying that that's necessarily going to be Spike, but the progression is necessary.
